She had 16 R&B hits for Fame Studios and received Grammy nominations for cover versions of country standards. Also, The Mighty Majors ("You Can Never Go Back") was her backup band once on the road.
In 1982 she returned to gospel forming Beracah Ministries with her husband John Sussewell. In 1991 she had a top 10 UK hit as The Source featuring Candi Staton with dance track "You Got The Love".

He's Making Love to You
CANDI STATON Lyrics

And gently start to squeeze
Kisses you in your ear
And makes you wanna scream
Touches you where you're soft
And makes you climb the wall
He's making love to you
Ooo yes he is
When he rubs your curly hands
And comforts you where you like
Soothes you where you're sore
And kisses away the pain
Holds you when you shake
And you hear him call my name
He's making love to you
But he's thinking of me
Ooo yes he is
When he squeezes your hand in his, oh baby
Feels you where you tender
And softly kisses your lips
And makes your soul surrender
When he soothes away your pain
Then he softly calls my name
He's making love to you
But he's thinking of me
Ooo yes he is
But he's thinking of me
Ooo yes he is
When he's holding you
He's thinking of me
The lyrics of Candi Staton's "He's Making Love to You" tell a story of a man who clearly cannot get over his former lover. Despite being intimate with someone else, he cannot help but think about his ex-lover - Candi Staton. The man is depicted as being unable to forget Candi, even as he whispers sweet nothings and caresses his current partner. The chorus repeats the central message that even though the man is making love to another woman, he is really thinking of Candi Staton.
The verses provide further detail on how the man's mind drifts back to Candi. He holds his current partner and comforts her where she likes, but when he soothes her pain and touches her tenderly, he calls out Candi's name. In essence, the song suggests that the new lover is simply a substitute for Candi Staton, someone the man cannot have either due to his own shortcomings or external factors. The song, therefore, is a tragic tale of lost love and unrequited feelings that still linger despite attempts to move on.
