Staton sang with the Jewell Gospel Trio and as teenagers, they toured the traditional gospel circuit in the 1950s with The Soul Stirrers, C. L. Franklin, and Mahalia Jackson. They recorded several sides for Nashbro, Apollo[disambiguation needed ], and Savoy Records between 1953 and 1963, before launching a solo career in 1968.
She had 16 R&B hits for Fame Studios and received Grammy nominations for cover versions of country standards. In 1975 she started working with disco producer Dave Crawford and had hits "Young Hearts Run Free" and "Victim". Also, The Mighty Majors ("You Can Never Go Back") was her backup band once on the road.
In 1982 she returned to gospel forming Beracah Ministries with her husband John Sussewell. In 1991 she had a top 10 UK hit as The Source featuring Candi Staton with dance track "You Got The Love".
In 2004 when Sex and the City ended its successful six-year run, the last song played on that show was "You Got the Love" with Sarah Jessica Parker walking down New York City streets and talking about the endless relationship with herself.
It's Not Easy Letting Go

When you Love somebody so
It's not easy letting go
Oh the road is long and slow
The pain is real
Only time can heal
It's not easy letting go
As I sit here on my bed
Thinking about the things we've said
I can't imagine what went wrong
with our direction
How we made it through the years
God knows we've shed some tears
But we also had some good times in the meantime
Might be hard but I gotta move on with my life
Can't keep looking back at the misery & strife
I do the best I can but my heart still needs to grieve
It's not easy letting go
Yesterday we played a game
Nothing lost and nothing gained
How could we let our emotions rule our heart
Thinking about the mistakes we made
Honey we almost paved the grave
It was our season but now it's over
It's not easy letting go
When you Love somebody so
It's not easy letting go
Oh the road is long and slow
The pain is real
Only time can heal
It's not easy letting go
In Candi Staton's song "It's Not Easy Letting Go," the singer communicates the difficulty of ending a relationship with someone that she genuinely loves despite issues that led them to separate. The opening lines suggest that the process of breaking free is challenging as she acknowledges that letting go is not an easy task. Loving someone who has become a part of one's life is not easy to expunge. Even though the road ahead is long and arduous with little hope of getting back together, it's a process one has to deal with.
As the song progresses, the lyrical content highlights some of the things that lead to the breakdown of a once prosperous relationship. Through the lines "Thinking about the things we've said, I can’t imagine what went wrong with our direction," the artist paints a picture of two individuals who may have once been connected but drifted away gradually. Amid the difficulties they faced, the relationship was not all despair; they experienced some good days together. However, despite their history, it is time to go separate ways and move on.
In the last verse of the song, the chorus repeats its opening lines, emphasizing the difficulty and pain caused by separation. However, it ends on a note of hope, indicating that time is needed for the healing process. The lyrics, "It's not easy letting go, the pain is real; only time can heal," emphasize the challenging transition people go through post-breakup. The overall message delivered is that while letting go may cause sadness and pain, it is necessary to move on and heal in the long run.
