Staton sang with the Jewell Gospel Trio and as teenagers, they toured the traditional gospel circuit in the 1950s with The Soul Stirrers, C. L. Franklin, and Mahalia Jackson. They recorded several sides for Nashbro, Apollo[disambiguation needed ], and Savoy Records between 1953 and 1963, before launching a solo career in 1968.
She had 16 R&B hits for Fame Studios and received Grammy nominations for cover versions of country standards. In 1975 she started working with disco producer Dave Crawford and had hits "Young Hearts Run Free" and "Victim". Also, The Mighty Majors ("You Can Never Go Back") was her backup band once on the road.
In 1982 she returned to gospel forming Beracah Ministries with her husband John Sussewell. In 1991 she had a top 10 UK hit as The Source featuring Candi Staton with dance track "You Got The Love".
In 2004 when Sex and the City ended its successful six-year run, the last song played on that show was "You Got the Love" with Sarah Jessica Parker walking down New York City streets and talking about the endless relationship with herself.

I'm standing in the dark
Where your eyes couldn't see me
Well, I have to follow you
Though you did not want me to
But that won't stop my lovin' you
I just can't stay away
Blaming it all on the nights on Broadway
Singin' them love songs
Singin' them straight-to-the-heart songs
Blamin' it all on the nights on Broadway
Singin' them sweet sounds
To that crazy, crazy town
Now in my place
There are so many others
Standin' in the line
How long will they stand between us?
Well, I have to follow you
Though you didn't want me to
But I just can't stop lovin' you babe
Say, can't stay away
Blaming it all on the nights on Broadway
Singin' them love songs
Singin' them straight-to-the-heart songs
Blamin' it all on the nights on Broadway
Singin' them sweet sounds
To that crazy, crazy town
Blaming it all on the nights on Broadway
Blaming it all on the nights on Broadway
Well, I have to follow you
Though you didn't want me to
But I just can't stop lovin' you babe
Say I can't stay away
Blaming it all on the nights on Broadway
Singin' them love songs
Singin' them straight-to-the-heart songs
Blamin' it all on the nights on Broadway
Singin' them sweet sounds
To that crazy, crazy town
Blaming it all on the nights on Broadway
Singin' them love songs
Singin' them straight-to-the-heart songs
Blamin' it all on the nights on Broadway
Singin' them sweet sounds
To that crazy, crazy town
The lyrics to "Nights on Broadway," performed by Candi Staton, describe a feeling of isolation and yearning for someone who does not reciprocate the singer's feelings. The first couple of lines, "Here we are in a room full of strangers / I'm standing in the dark / Where your eyes couldn't see me," set the scene of the singer's loneliness in the midst of a crowd. She then sings about her persistence in pursuing someone who does not want her, but she cannot help but love them. The chorus blames it all on the "nights on Broadway," singing love songs that speak straight to the heart and sweet sounds to a crazy town, referring to how the city could make people feel both alive and alone.
The second verse describes how many people stand between the singer and the person she loves, yet she still follows them. She cannot stop loving them, no matter how much they may reject her. Once again, the chorus repeats, blaming everything on the "nights on Broadway" and how they sing love songs straight to the heart, but the singer cannot help herself from going there and feeling alone. Overall, the song's lyrics evoke a feeling of longing and isolation, even in a bustling city like Broadway.
