Staton sang with the Jewell Gospel Trio and as teenagers, they toured the traditional gospel circuit in the 1950s with The Soul Stirrers, C. L. Franklin, and Mahalia Jackson. They recorded several sides for Nashbro, Apollo[disambiguation needed ], and Savoy Records between 1953 and 1963, before launching a solo career in 1968.
She had 16 R&B hits for Fame Studios and received Grammy nominations for cover versions of country standards. In 1975 she started working with disco producer Dave Crawford and had hits "Young Hearts Run Free" and "Victim". Also, The Mighty Majors ("You Can Never Go Back") was her backup band once on the road.
In 1982 she returned to gospel forming Beracah Ministries with her husband John Sussewell. In 1991 she had a top 10 UK hit as The Source featuring Candi Staton with dance track "You Got The Love".
In 2004 when Sex and the City ended its successful six-year run, the last song played on that show was "You Got the Love" with Sarah Jessica Parker walking down New York City streets and talking about the endless relationship with herself.
You Got The Love

I know I can count on you
Sometimes I feel like saying "Lord, I just don't care"
But you've got the love I need to see me through
Sometimes it seems that the going gets so rough
And things go wrong no matter what I do
Now and then it feels like life is just too much
When food is gone, you are my daily meal, ooh
When friends are gone I know my savior's love is real
Your love is real
You've got the love, you've got the love, you've got the love
You've got the love, you've got the love
Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air
I know I can count on you
Sometimes I feel like saying "Lord, I just don't care"
But you've got the love I need to see me through
Every once in a while I'll think "Lord I can't go on"
Every once in a while I get to feeling blue
Every once in a while it seems like I am all alone
But you got the love I need to see me through
Occasionally I cry out, "Lord, what must I do?"
Occasionally I cry out, "Master, make me new"
You've got the love I need to see me through
Well, ooh
Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air
I know I can count on you
Sometimes I feel like saying "Lord, I just don't care"
But you've got the love I need to see me through
You've got the love, hmm
You've got the love
Whatever I need
You've got it, yeah
Whatever I want, ooh
I'm never alone
You've got the love I need to see me through
You've got the love I need to see me through
You've got it, yeah
Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air
I know I can count on you
Sometimes I feel like saying "Lord, I just don't care"
You've got the love I need to see me through
Sometimes it seems that the going gets so rough
And things go wrong no matter what I do
Now and then it feels like life is just too much
But you've got the love I need to see me through
When food is gone you are my daily meal, ooh
When friends are gone I know my savior's love is real
Your love is real
The lyrics to "You Got The Love" by Candi Staton express the idea that sometimes we feel helpless and lost, but there is always love to help us through tough times. The song speaks to the power of love and how it can be the anchor we need when we feel like giving up.
The first verse sets the tone for the rest of the song by expressing the feeling of being at the end of one's rope. However, the second line shows that the singer knows that they can rely on the love of another person, perhaps a friend or a significant other, to help them through it. The chorus then repeats the idea that the love they have access to is enough to make everything feel better.
The second verse reflects on the fact that things don't always go as planned, and sometimes life can be too much to handle. But the singer reassures themselves that the love they have is enough to persevere. The third verse brings a religious element to the song, as the singer expresses their belief in a higher power and how that brings them comfort in times of need.
The song concludes with a repetition of the chorus and a final affirmation that the love they have is enough to get through anything.

I remember jackin' my body to this at 10 yrs. old ('79), in Chicago. My older sister was a "member" of the Warehouse and Power Plant and taught us how to JACK! Those were some great times. I miss you Frankie Knuckles, Rob Hardy and Robert Owens. #CHICAGOHOUSE #HOUSEHEAD

I'm in a weird place right now..
I just heard my nxt door neighbour play this old skool track as I lie in my garden on a rare red hot July day in Newcastle during #lockdown2020 ...
I was 15 when this remix was dropped, but it was still getting rinsed a few years later when I started going out to town drinking in our infamous Bigg Market.
I'm now 44yrs young, and just recently became a Christian..
And for the first time ever in my life, I realise that these song lyrics are about Jesus!!!
So, you'll understand why I say I'm in a weird place right now! Lo!
All this time, and all the times I've raved my nut off to this track in pubs and particularly in packed, smoky nightclubs in the 90's and beyond and never given it a thought that it was about anything other than the love between two people.
Wow, I was blind and now I see, 😉

This, this is my anthem. This tune gets me on every level. Had it on vinyl in 91 when I was 12. No other version comes close. 30yrs later and still get waves of euphoria and tears of emotion when I listen to it.
@andrewdouglass1427
Rock on! It's pretty much a gospel song, but it's also bigger than that and it IS crazy inspirational. I mean, does it get much more compelling than this?
