Staton sang with the Jewell Gospel Trio and as teenagers, they toured the traditional gospel circuit in the 1950s with The Soul Stirrers, C. L. Franklin, and Mahalia Jackson. They recorded several sides for Nashbro, Apollo[disambiguation needed ], and Savoy Records between 1953 and 1963, before launching a solo career in 1968.
She had 16 R&B hits for Fame Studios and received Grammy nominations for cover versions of country standards. In 1975 she started working with disco producer Dave Crawford and had hits "Young Hearts Run Free" and "Victim". Also, The Mighty Majors ("You Can Never Go Back") was her backup band once on the road.
In 1982 she returned to gospel forming Beracah Ministries with her husband John Sussewell. In 1991 she had a top 10 UK hit as The Source featuring Candi Staton with dance track "You Got The Love".
In 2004 when Sex and the City ended its successful six-year run, the last song played on that show was "You Got the Love" with Sarah Jessica Parker walking down New York City streets and talking about the endless relationship with herself.

The woman in me shines
Where you touch me, Lord
With the look that says you're mine
In sweet surrender
With a kiss so warm amd tender
It says love me, baby
Wherever you go
I'll always be by your side
Though I may not always show it
I want you to know it
Oh, oh, oh, baby, baby
I'm so glad I found you, oh, yeah
There's so much to love about you
Just let me wrap my love around you
There's no place this side of Heaven
On God's green Earth I'd rather be
Than here, loving you loving me
Every time you gently touch my hand
I thank the Lord that
I got you for my man
'Cause you pledged with deep emotion
A lifelong devotion to me
Oh, there could never be
Love more precious
Than the one you've given me
Though I may not always show it
But I hope you know it
Oh, oh, baby, baby
I'm so glad I found you
There's so much to love about you
Oh, yeah, just let me wrap
My love around you
There's no place this side of Heaven
On God's green Earth I'd rather be
Than sitting here, loving you loving me
The lyrics of Candi Staton's "Lovin' You Lovin' Me" express the depth of affection between two lovers. The woman feels like she shines when her man smiles at her. His touch and look indicate that they belong to each other, and in sweet surrender, they exchange warm and tender kisses. Their love is unbreakable, and she pledges to love him till the end of time.
The woman adores her man and cherishes every moment they spend together. She promises to stand by him through thick and thin and expresses her gratitude for having him in her life. The song's lyrics stress that their love is special, and she wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. In the end, she affirms that there's no better place to be than loving him and being loved by him.
