Humanity was just incredibly lucky the buggers one, recognized their mistake, and two, were incredibly compassionate and moral beings.
You mention the movie, so not sure if you've read the book where it explains it a lot better. But basically the buggers are a hive mind. With the individual drones not being sapient or meaningful. Lossing them is nothing to them. And they assumed the same was true of humanity when they first ran in to us.
When they realized that each one they killed was fully sapient like a queen, they were super horrified at what they'd done.
They wanted peace and to make it right, but couldn't communicate with us. And here is where the humans got lucky. The buggers didn't want to attack us. And refused to. I mean, they fought to defend themselves when attacked. But never once was another invasion attempted. They couldn't bring themselves to do it. Even though they understood that left them fighting a defensive war they basically had no chance of winning. How can you win a war with out attacking you enemies territory?
But if they hadn't been so compassionate and instead decided "us or them" there would have been absolutely nothing humanity could have to stop them. They'd of wiped humans out with little effort.

Correction: It would take 100's of year for them to travel at 5% speed. My math was.... wrong.

Can you say hey to me? It would make my week
Edmond L.
It wouldn't take hundreds of years, it would take like 2000 years. Also, your grammar is off, I expected more from a "professional" channel.

But with their understanding of travel, and being slightly more advanced than us, wouldn't they realize that they're looking at an older earth and prepare for it?

Imagine aliens having the technology to travel massive distance through space from one star to another, just so they can have a interstellar battle with earthlings that are equiped with primitive technology.

Mussolini would like to disagree with you(his invasion of Ethiopia, a country with such an underdeveloped military technology)
Lord Samrat
@Mathew Jose why disagree
Stanford Hapi
Also imagine thinking that these beings capable of interstellar travel wouldn't have accounted for things like time disparity for natural technological advancements. The aliens know more than us. It's not like they are just going to assume that earth's species would remain stagnant for 120 years lol.
