Humanity was just incredibly lucky the buggers one, recognized their mistake, and two, were incredibly compassionate and moral beings.

You mention the movie, so not sure if you've read the book where it explains it a lot better. But basically the buggers are a hive mind. With the individual drones not being sapient or meaningful. Lossing them is nothing to them. And they assumed the same was true of humanity when they first ran in to us.

When they realized that each one they killed was fully sapient like a queen, they were super horrified at what they'd done.

They wanted peace and to make it right, but couldn't communicate with us. And here is where the humans got lucky. The buggers didn't want to attack us. And refused to. I mean, they fought to defend themselves when attacked. But never once was another invasion attempted. They couldn't bring themselves to do it. Even though they understood that left them fighting a defensive war they basically had no chance of winning. How can you win a war with out attacking you enemies territory?

But if they hadn't been so compassionate and instead decided "us or them" there would have been absolutely nothing humanity could have to stop them. They'd of wiped humans out with little effort.

I was going to say; that's a pretty bad error. I think aliens crossing 100 light-years over a 500 year span of time that in effect, either had to conquer or die, would be able to replace infantry losses and be able to produce (I would think using nanotechnology) whatever manufacturing would be required for weapons/equipment/transportation platforms necessary to replace their losses. Unless they were like the Sea People fleeing some type of natural disaster but why cross 100 light-years of space? A better example would be red dwarf star GJ 887 with three planets within the life zone. Only 11 light-years from Earth, at a constant velocity of .05c that would be 55 years, much more realistic.

Access to resources is pretty much the same everywhere in our galactic neighbourhood at industrial scale. Sure, in their early civilization limitations of resources could guide them on different technological paths, but eventually, they will be able to mine everything and find the most optimal solutions. The ultimate limitations are the abundance of elements in the universe and planet formation processes, and those are the same.

For the examples that you gave:
1) Materials with massive energy outputs: We already have those; they're called uranium, plutonium, hydrogen and antimatter. Fusion of hydrogen releases about 0.7% of its mass as energy, which is more than pretty much any other nuclear process other than antimatter. For the antimatter, we could in principle focus our economy on its production and develop magnetic storing methods. We haven't yet, so if aliens have those, that makes them more advanced, but not qualitatively different. And if our understanding of physics is really incomplere, which would allow them to have some super energetic material, then, it's not the issue of resources.

2) No access to materials denser than aluminium - those material exists; as I said, the limitation is relative abundance of elements in our part of the universe. Even if their home planets doesn't have those, they definitely exist in their planetary system; they would be able to acquire them.

3) More gravity on their planet/star - You can't build extra momentum from it, as if gravity was a springboard; that's not how gravity works. Extra gravity would only mean it's harder to get into space, while reduced gravity would mean it's easier. But either way, those differences are irrelevant. You would use different method to get into space that to get interstellar; the limitations of interstellar engines are laws of physics and interstellar material. Slightly larger/smaller initial speed from different gravity would just mean you have to accelerate for slightly shorter/longer time; but ultimately, the difference in transfer time would be tiny.

What's interesting is that the asymmetric warfare approach of running till an opportune moment arises is actually the history of successful US military encounters such as Sam Houston defeating Santa Anna at the Battle if San Jacinto. Ok, that was Texas versus Mexico but many of US's battles before becoming a super power followed the same format run till the pursuers gets sloppy, then attack. 1: We dont have any bases in the space that can be used as a first line of defense, so we need to build one

I'm sorry but even if the alien spacecraft somehow lost connection while entering the atmosphere (most likely caused by plasma covering the spacecraft) it only stops connection with our space shuttles for a couple minutes so I doubt it would be long enough for us to do much.

By "costly", the video didn't mean exactly currency, but tangible work and resources, in general. Even without money, it would still take natural, non-replenishable resources (such as metals and fuel) and work to extract and refine these resources into something useful. So, they would still have limitations akin to our monetary system, only in other complicated and different ways.

An alien told me some 45 years ago that we are the real aliens in their vast universe, not as this video depicts. Obviously lots of assumptions were made here and I assume the goal was a happy "humans win" ending, and I'm fine with that. You had some fun conjecture here. I think though we'd send some probes to the alien's world to suss out some intelligence.

The aliens can leverage these tactics to their own advantage - if they can set up a forward base on Mars, and develop their own industry, and a small, but sustainable population base, they can overcome some of these logistics and supply problems, but of course, that would take much, much longer.

The plan in the video is based on a typical human army which has a lot of restrictions, from moral and political to purely practical/economic, and is never intended for a total genocide of a whole human population simply because the chances are pretty slim. Implementing total genocide methods would result in self-destruction before you would reach the goal because we live on the same planet. Even a total nuclear war would leave some survivors.

The aliens, on the other hand, don't have such restrictions, the genocide is their best option and it can mostly be done without directly engaging the Earth armies. Since it's a different species from another planet, they woudn't need to preserve the current conditions for this planet such as temperature or oxygen levels, and they have their mothership. They can mess them up and wipe everything this way. For example, orbital strikes on that scale can be enough to decimate food production (through climate change, removal of the ozone layer, etc.) and sufficiently reduce human population before launching the invasion.

Basically, the only chance of fighting back is when the invasion is done by some complete space idiots.

I've always thought Alien invasion movies as silly and more of just society's fear of the "other." If a society had the means and ingenuity to achieve interstellar travel, it could be assumed they excel at harvesting resources far better in their home system or other nearby systems without having to fight a bunch of bipedal apes living on a rock. Were they ever interested in Earth, it would probably be to study a species that went extinct due to its own nature.

Believe it or not but we can't actually detect stuff in space this easily, out of the thousands of asteroids that head toward earth we've only detected a handful (it's less than 10 but I'm having trouble actually remembering the exact number), so we probably would detect an advanced alien spaceship approaching us unless it was the size of a mountain and even then it would be when its around Mars at best.

This is basically a War of the Worlds type scenario, except the aliens don't originate for Mars (so 2005 version). That's a low level Type II civilization according to the Kardeshev scale (Prof. Michio Kaku explains this quite well). If it is an Independence Day scenario, which is a full on Type III civilization, unless we have the ability to blow up what would be the equivalence of the Death Star, we would be doomed.

My only question is, how are aliens succumbed to "Financial Limitations"? I forgot the name of the novel but there’s a sci fi story similar to this. The aliens progress technological very slowly, over the course of thousands of years. They see earth several hundred years in the past and choose to invade. It takes them several centuries to arrive and they are horrified that humans technology almost equals theirs and actually exceeds theirs in some areas (weapons, etc) when they arrive.

You are completely forgetting that most large airliners are complete fly by wire systems. Yes they have multiple redundancies but not against a large emp which would short every control system. Complete system failure would result in them dropping out of the sky as the pilots would have zero control.

If I were an alien invading Earth, I would design multiple highly infectious bioweapons specifically targeting human cells which trigger with a specific cue. Once I was confident everyone was infected, I would signal the bioweapons to activate or use the threat of them to pacify any resistance (if I cared about keeping the humans alive for ethical reasons).

Very interesting and well put together in narrative. It may even make a good film. However, I must say something is off. Sounds to me that the plan is just brute force. They could store energy in form of anti-matter or some type of energy weapon.

Knowing they can't see in depending at high speed, they will problebly slowly enter the atmosphere with no plasma and have there defenses on high alert when entering the "battle zone".

After watching this, the Covenant from Halo makes a lot more sense. After integrating multiple different races to give them sheer numbers, they constructed a massive primary fleet centered around a single, moving, capital city super structure. This let their fleet stay entirely mobile while using resources from successful invasions that were won through numbers, superior technology and diversified combat rolls. And they never settled planets. To prevent retaking of any planets in the ensuing wars they systematically nuked the surface with ridiculous amounts of ships rendering it inhospitable to any form of life. Couple all this with a near masterful display of precise warp jumping with ships the size of small cities, they effectively outgunned, outnumbered, and were very capable of outmaneuvering human fleets at the pinnacle of their space age.
