Velvet
Candi and The Strangers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Velvet lips, we're out of time
I can feel your heart, beating next to mine
And the sun is coming up, but I don't wanna let go
Lie awake with me, is this the last time ?

Perfect stranger, stay with me tonight
Until its over, I'm yours and you are mine
Run away, leave this place behind

The morning sun, I felt it
You were gone away, the feeling left behind
I can hear your voice, I can feel your touch
But your velvet lips, left your mark on me

Perfect stranger, stay with me tonight
Until its over, I'm yours and you are mine
Run away, leave this place behind

We'll stay forever
We'll stay forever

Overall Meaning

In "Velvet," Candi and The Strangers capture a passionate and fleeting encounter between two individuals. The first verse sets the scene as the singers acknowledge their limited time together. The mention of "velvet lips" creates an atmosphere of sensuality and intimacy. They can feel the other person's heartbeat, signifying the intensity of their connection. As the sun rises, they are reluctant to let go, wishing to savor the moment and extend their time together.

The chorus speaks to the desire for this perfect stranger to stay with them throughout the night. They express a willingness to give themselves fully to each other, implying a deep level of trust and surrender. The line "Until it's over, I'm yours and you are mine" suggests a temporary escape or reprieve from their realities.

In the second verse, the singers express a longing to run away together, leaving their current circumstances behind. They are tempted by the idea of escaping the constraints of their lives, seeking a place where they can be together without hinderance or judgment.

The bridge of the song takes a reflective turn as the morning sun arrives, bringing with it a sense of reality. The singer realizes that their lover has left, and even though they can still recall their voice and touch, it feels like a distant memory. The repetition of "your velvet lips" indicates that this person, and the mark they left on the singer, had a profound impact.

The chorus is repeated once more, emphasizing the desire for the perfect stranger to remain by their side. The final line, "We'll stay forever," expresses an unfulfilled yearning for a continued connection, even though the temporary nature of their encounter suggests that this may not be possible.

Overall, "Velvet" tells the story of a passionate, intense, and short-lived relationship or encounter. The lyrics evoke a sense of longing, longing for connection, and the bittersweet realization that what was once experienced may not last forever.

Candy says I've come to hate my body
and all that it requires in this world
Candy says I'd like to know completely
what others so discretely talk about

Candy says I hate the quiet places
that cause the smallest taste of what will be
Candy says I hate the big decisions
that cause endless revisions in my mind

I'm gonna watch the blue birds fly over my shoulder
I'm gonna watch them pass me by
Maybe when I'm older
What do you think I'd see
If I could walk away from me

Velvet Underground wrote the most beautifully haunting songs about depression and isolation. They still hold up today.

@grantous67

There is an endless catalogue of culture from the past that 'still holds up today'. Shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone

@@grantous67 If Fox News heard this song, they'd call it "uber woke" which makes the point of this song of being trans in this bigoted world. :(

This song means so much to me as someone who has suffered much rejection in life. The whole of the third Velvets album is so brilliant !

@@lenini056 It's woke in a good way

When I first listened to The Velvet Underground as a young teenager, I loved this whole album, and this song in particular. I never could have imagined though how intimately I would come to relate to it just a few years later. I didn't even realize what it was about. Funny how that works, providence.

"what do you think I'd see if I could walk away from me." Incredible. Lou Reed was one of my favorite lyricists.

What a beautiful, understated, relaxing, calming song. The Velvet Underground's self titled album is a timeless masterpiece.

Dude you're everywhere! Nice Husker Du cover.

@danielyahalom3961

Better than their first album. I'm willing to fight over it.
