Candlebox was known for an explosive live show and throughout their 8 year career, they toured with such bands as Living Colour, The Flaming Lips, Our Lady Peace, Rush, Henry Rollins, and Metallica. They were also a featured band on the main-stage at Woodstock '94 and made repeat live performances on the David Letterman show.
They are best known for the singles "Change", "You", "Far Behind" and "Simple Lessons". "Far Behind" entered Billboard's Top 20 in July of 1993 and didn't drop off the charts until January of 1994. The videos for "Far Behind" and "You" were in seemingly perpetual rotation on MTV and became two of the most requested videos of 1993.
Drummer Scott Mercado left the band in 1997 and was replaced by former Pearl Jam member Dave Krusen. Krusen later left the band in 1999 and was replaced by Shannon Larkin of Ugly Kid Joe. Bardi Martin also left the band that year, and was replaced by Rob Reddick (formerly of Dig). The band split in year 2000.
As of 2005, singer Kevin Martin is currently recording and performing as the leader of The Hiwatts. Peter Klett is currently recording and performing as the leader of redlightmusic.
In 2006, Candlebox has reunited with their original line-up. They went on a three-month North American tour beginning on July 1st of the same year. This marks their first collaboration since 1996.
In 2008, Candlebox released their fourth studio album called "Into the sun". This meant their return since 1998's Happy Pills. Also, they released a Live album called "Alive in Seattle" which includes tracks from all their past albums.
In 2009, Kevin Martin (along with Sean Hennesy, Candlebox's guitarist) helped form the super-group The Gracious Few with three of the members of the band LIVE. Functioning as lead singer, the band went on to release a self-titled album which accompanied an extensive tour. Though LIVE has reformed with a new lead singer, more material from The Gracious Few is said to be released in the future

I thought you felt the same.
Somehow he thought you'd be there
Help him beat me down, again.
It's all I know.
So you want for me, some things we never see.
Left alone to fill time.
So empty all your thoughts now, turn around your hate,
Hang on security.
It's all been overrated, this life you live, it's not your own.
There's no one here to help you.
It's all been unadulterated lies, they'll keep telling you
they'll keep telling you, how I want to
Raise it on my own,
Nothing special maybe, nothing special lately
Time to feel it on your own, time you want to take control
So you've told them all,
I thought you looked the same
Do you need this light to help you see it clearer again?
Closer to my letter,
Open up for some to breed,
you're sharper these days, roll on security.
It's all been overrated, this life to live, it's not your own
there's no one here to help you
And it's all been unadulterated lies, they'll keep telling you
They keep telling you, how I want to
Raise it on my own,
Nothing special lately, nothing special maybe
Time to feel it on your own,
Time you want to take control
No now fall, call for me to fall for
Everybody wants to tell you something,
Everybody wants to fill your, nothing.
Everybody wants to break you out now,
Everybody wants to take you out now.
And everybody wants to tell you,
And everybody wants to fill you in.
Do you think it's time to tell them?
Yes I think it's time you shove them a little harder.
Yes I think it's time that you pushed them over
Don't you think it's time you told them stop!
Raise it on my own no, no time to feel your soulless lately
Everybody wants to tell you something,
Everybody wants to bring you something,
Everybody wants to take you,
And everybody wants to bring you down
Time you feel it in your own,
Time you let them take control,
Time you fill their needs,
So empty all your thoughts my friends
For everybody wants to break you,
And everybody wants to push you around
The lyrics in Candlebox's song Understanding describe the experience of being lied to, betrayed, and let down by others. The singer expresses confusion and hurt at the way people have treated them, particularly someone they thought was a friend who ended up turning against them. They speak about feeling alone and empty, and how others seem to want to take advantage of their vulnerability. However, the singer also recognizes that it's time to take control of their life and stop allowing others to manipulate and hurt them. They urge listeners to do the same and not let themselves be pushed around.
The song seems to be about personal empowerment, encouraging listeners to stand up for themselves and not let others dictate their lives. The repeated refrain of "raise it on my own" suggests a desire to be independent and self-sufficient, even in the face of adversity. At the same time, the lyrics convey a sense of frustration and anger at the way people can treat each other, with lines like "everybody wants to bring you down."
Overall, Understanding is a powerful and emotionally charged song that touches on themes of betrayal, empowerment, and self-discovery.

WAY underrated song from a hugely underrated band. This was their "Progressive" song, and our band did a cover of it back in the day in Gainesville, FL. Always fun to play, and always fun to listen to. Great songs. This band and "Gin Blossoms" should've been right up there with PJ and Soundgarden.

Kevin is an amazing vocalist, he's got 3 bands and solo work. He hasn't lost his voice like other aging musicians. I feel lucky to have been in the Seattle scene when all the Seattle bands changed music history forever! I got to watch as the magic happened (BTW Seattle bands and fans are offended by being called grunge) Candlebox will always be famous because the music is great and will stand the test of time !Kevin has the sexiest voice and no matter what band hes in, candlebox will be my fave. The new album Disappearing in airport's is awesome, not one bad song on it!! They're truly underrated but I will always know that candlebox will be around for- ever !
