Amphetamine
Canned Heat Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This is a song with a message
I want you to heed my warning

I wanna tell you all a story
About this chick I know
They call her "Amphetamine Annie"
She's always shoveling snow
I sat her down and told her
I told her crystal clear
"I don't mind you getting high
But there's one thing you should fear"

"Your mind might think its flying, baby
On those little pills
But you ought to know it's dying, 'cause
Speed kills"

But Annie kept on speeding
Her health was getting poor
She saw things in the window
She heard things at the door

Her mind was like a grinding mill
Her lips were cracked and sore
Her skin was turning yellow
I just couldn't take it no more

She thought her mind was flying
On those little pills
She didn't it was going down fast, 'cause
Speed kills

Well I sat her down and told her
I told her one more time
"The whole wide human race has taken
Far too much methedrine"

She said I don't care what a Limey says
I've got to get it on
I'm not here to just see no man
Who come from across the pond

She wouldn't heed my warning
Lord, she wouldn't hear what I said

Now she's in the graveyard, and she's
Awfully dead

But there's one thing you should fear"

"Your mind might think its flying, baby
On those little Corp pills
But you ought to know it's dying, 'cause

My Generation thought the Boomers mind was flying
On those little pills
My Generation didn't it was going down fast,
'cause Speed kills
Well I sat the Boomers down and told the generation

I didn't heed that story. Took me awhile. Speed was damn good in the old days. We all like to get a little high and happy.

Bob

To put this song into perspective, when it was written during the late 60's Speed was only one thing: Methamphetamine, (Methedrine in the song), people used to shoot the stuff, snort it or take it in pills called Desoxyn (little yellow pills in the song). Speed and heroin are what destroyed Haight Ashbury in San Francisco. Speed gradually became a catchall phrase for any synthetic stimulant such as Dexy's (Dexedrine) and Benny's (Benzedrine which was the first) and all sorts of other stuff ADHD meds nowadays, these were less harmful depending on how many you took, I haven't touched that stuff over 40 years, that's why I'm still alive at 67 years old.

well Benny's were being done by the beatniks jack neal who drove for the merry pranksters acid tests and all this stuff and amphetamine was big for poets in 50's, joplin was doing it in 1964-65. Keith Richards himself stated the change from the 60's to the 70's was heroin. it killed both Joplin and was Garcias biggest drug of choice. John lennon was doing it, Mick Jagger, Jimmy Page the transference from the 60's to 70's wasnt really speed as much as it seemed to be heroin. i did speed and i loved every minute of it back in the day but the people who for the most part got destroyed and became junkies were the opiate fiends. Chuck Negron another one Three dog night, 60's to 70's thing again, same with Cream and Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker. it was all heroin. Nico another 60's star who was heroin dependant. George Jung didnt really popularize american stimulant use on a wide scale until much later. another point is benzedrine wasnt first, it was the first popular one. Pervitin was rampant in germany in the 1940's Judy Garland was given speed in the 1930's for the Wizard of Oz film by the MGM exec's, hell there were was Hitler who got prescribed shots of speed, JFK/US president who was and an English prime minister who was but were talking 25mg vials so i dont think america was shocked or burnt out on speed. i think we moved from a jazz heroin era of the 20's to 50's to an acid marijuana era of the 60's to a heroin/Quaaludes era of the 70's then in the 80's cocaine then later a meth epidemic and now a benzo/pill epidemic. just my opinion though

Righto.....hated it then, hate it now...I do exctacy about 3 times a year these days...its helped me with my confidence, and given me some empathy for alot of folks I'd like to otherwise choke the shit out of.....exctacy is a sort of meth but kinder, gentler.......wiser.......i am 60.
