My Crime
Canned Heat Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I went to Denver
Late last fall.
I went to do my job.
Yeah, I didn't break any law.
We worked a hippie place,
Like many in our land.
They couldn't bust the place,
And so they got the band.
'Cause the police in Denver,
No, they don't want none of them long hairs hanging around.
And that's the reason why
They want to tear Canned Heat's reputation down.
You people in Denver
Will know what I mean.
Yeah, the things I'm gonna tell ya.
Yeah, you've all heard and seen.
You remember when a cop on the beat
Used to rob and steal.
Today they're gone, but the others get it on,
So you know just how I feel.
'Cause the police in Denver,
Lord, they don't want none of them long hairs hanging around.
And that's the reason why
They try to tear Canned Heat's reputation down.
Yeah, they try to tear it down, boy.
They ain't gonna do it though.
Let me tell you this, just one more time.
Just one more thing I want to tell ya
Before I go.
It's a shame, the Man in Denver
Has to lie and mistreat people so.
Now, six months ain't no sentence,
One year ain't no time.
When I hear from one to ten,
It worries my troubled mind.
'Cause the police in Denver,
Lord, don't want no long hairs around.

And that's the reason why
They try to tear Canned Heat's reputation down.

Overall Meaning

The song "My Crime" by Canned Heat is a protest anthem against the police attitude towards people with long hair in the late 1960s. The vocalist describes a scenario where he went to Denver for work and ended up playing at a hippie place, which was a common occurrence at the time. However, the police raided the place and arrested the band because they didn't want any "long hairs hanging around." The vocalist expresses his frustration at how the police mistreat people with long hair, while also pointing out that the police aren't any better, given how some of them used to rob and steal from people.

The song carries a strong undercurrent of social commentary and commentary on corruption as it highlights how individuals in positions of power abuse that power to destroy the reputation of others. Canned Heat's lyrics make it clear that the police's attempt to tear the band's reputation down motivated by nothing more than their stigmatization of long hair. The song stresses that music and lifestyle choices should not lead to people being treated unjustly or criminalized.

to truely keep the memory of canned heat alive u play their original records loud, yeah no cds in this house just good old analogue vinyl,n when i heard sundazed,s vinyl version of the 1st lp i was appauled,so many overdubs i lost count,it sickens me cos this isnt how the band intended it 2 b heard, respect is totally absent when u pointlessly remove huge parts of the recording, just 2 hide how sonically inferior digital vinyl is,im a musician 2 respect the past u dont pointlessly change it.
