Work
Cans Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Nine years old
A headstone
Didn't ever think that she would leave
Me behind
On my own
I hope that you were fucking proud of me
I'd been blind
You're unkind to me
Guess that's just the Lord's Work
Never giving me the things I asked for
Harboring the dreams that I would break for
Keeping all my hopes just out of reach
Guess that's just the Lord's Work
Set me up to fail so you can take more
Hoping that I'll fall just for your fake wars
When all's said and done you'll say I'm clean
You want me to love you, I don't
You want me to trust you, I won't
Countless suffer at your hands
Say it's all part of your plan
You want me to love you, I don't
You want me to trust you, I won't
Countless suffer at your hands
Say it's all part of your plan
No one heard
Me alone
Never in those years I'd ever seen
The lord's work
In my home
If you were real it all would be a dream
You want me to love you, I don't

You want me to trust you, I won't
I think you're just a man

Overall Meaning

The song "Work" by Cans is a powerful expression of the artist's experience growing up without a mother. The opening lines reveal that the singer's mother died when they were only nine years old, leaving them feeling abandoned and alone. The use of the word "headstone" emphasizes the finality of death and the permanence of the loss. The singer then addresses their mother with bitterness, questioning whether she could possibly be proud of them after leaving them behind. They express a sense of feeling unseen and unheard, suggesting that their mother was not there for them even before she died.

The chorus, "Guess that's just the Lord's Work," adds a layer of complexity to the singer's emotions. The phrase can be interpreted in a few ways: either the singer believes that God caused their mother's death, or they see it as an act of fate or destiny. The sense of powerlessness and resignation conveyed in the phrase is echoed throughout the song, as the singer reflects on how their life has been shaped by forces beyond their control. They suggest that their dreams and hopes have been thwarted at every turn, and that they have been set up to fail by someone who wants to profit from their struggles.

The final lines of the song offer a stark rejection of the idea of a loving, caring God. The singer declares that they do not love or trust God, and that they see him as nothing more than a man. This is a powerful statement of both disbelief and disillusionment, suggesting that the singer has come to reject the idea of a higher power that watches over and cares for them. It is a poignant reminder of the ways in which our experiences shape our beliefs and perceptions of the world around us.

Gee, maybe they could explain how the can starts and stops the flow, how it connects, how much it weighs, how many gallons does it hold, how many gallons per second it flows, how do they know when the first can is empty when using 2 cans........terrible video aimed for children.

Wow, this didn’t describe how anything worked. So a tube took place of a catch can…how about explaining how it dumps 20 gallons of fuel in a few seconds 🙄
