Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once you find out the circumstances
Then you can uh go out, whoa yeah

Once you find out the circumstances
Then you can uh go out, whoa yeah

Little girl don't you know that the stars up above are runnin' on love
Little girl don't you know that they're blinkin' at you
Now the sun can sun burn you but
Not as bad as those old people do, yeah

Ah once you find out the circumstances
Then you can uh go out, whoa yeah

Little girl don't you know that the stars up above are runnin' on love
Little girl don't you know that uh they're blinkin' at you
Now the sun can sun burn you but
Not as bad as those o-o-o-old people do, yeah ha ha ha

Ah once you once you find out the circumstances
Then you then you then you then yo-u-u-u-u can go out, ah yeah

You can go o-o-o-out

Overall Meaning

The song "Circumstances" by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band is a cryptic commentary on the many challenges and complexities of life. The song's repeated refrain, "Once you find out the circumstances, then you can go out," suggests that there are certain conditions or factors that must be understood before one can truly make progress or achieve a level of success. The reference to the stars above and their "love" suggests that there are larger forces at work in the universe that we may not fully comprehend, but that we must learn to work with and harness in order to succeed.

The lyrics also allude to the harsh realities of life, particularly the way that older generations can be unkind or harmful to those who are younger and less experienced. The lines "Now the sun can sun burn you but not as bad as those old people do" suggest that it's not just external factors like the sun that can do us harm, but also the people around us who may not have our best interests at heart. Ultimately, the song seems to be urging us to keep seeking knowledge and understanding, even when the going gets tough, in order to find a path forward.

I can't tell you how many times I have listened to this record over the last 30 years and loved every minute of it. What I really like is that this was the Captain's attempt at becoming more commercially accessible. Screw commercial music. Beefheart is the real deal.

@tracyporter5471

True genius. He copied Howlin Wolf's voice, but the similarities stop there.

@chrishenniker5944

Trout Mask Replica's not a commercial recording, but it's actually very accessible. It's people like Beefheart and Zappa who made the avant garde available for all and articulated it in an accessible way, which is why I like them both.

Almost 50 years for me, man!

Tracy Porter like Wolf, he is one of a kind.

The production on this album is amazing. The break at 1.21 then at 1.53 blows me away every time. Easily in the top 5 albums of the 70's.

@chaunceybaker6612

The fact that this track was recorded in 1972 is mind blowing. It would have fit in easily within 90s indie/alternative.

@jaykay5580

what are you talking about?

My eyes just flipped up into my head. Superb. Superb. Drumming. Vocals. Bass. No one else can do this.
