Dublin Lullaby
Captain Tractor Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

CHORUS:
We're gonna drink and fight, and drink and fight, and drink and fight some more.
When the drinking's done grab anyone and go and fight some more.
So grab your friends and neighbours and punch 'em in the eye,
And raise another glass and sing the Dublin lullaby

O'Leary was a bastard.
I gave his head a crack.
I drank a pint of Guinness
And puked all over his back.

Oh Johnus he was sickened
With Patty in the back.
When Irish eyes are smiling
We'll punch 'em 'till they're black.

CHORUS

O'Leary and O'Connell
Had been drinking pretty hard.
Been sitting for a fortnight
With Clancy at the bar.

He got so stewed that when he spewed
We swore he must've drowned.
So we kicked his ass, raised a glass
And bought another round.

CHORUS

Well, I went out with O'Leary
To old MacDonald's wake.
We drank a lot of Stone Ale
And ate a lot of cake.

O'Malley singin' "Danny Boy"
And filled my eyes with tears
So I kicked his nuts right into his guts
And had another beer.

Overall Meaning

Captain Tractor's song Dublin Lullaby is a humorous and rowdy song about the Irish drinking and fighting culture. The chorus contains the lyrics "We're gonna drink and fight, and drink and fight, and drink and fight some more / When the drinking's done grab anyone and go and fight some more / So grab your friends and neighbours and punch 'em in the eye / And raise another glass and sing the Dublin lullaby", which are repeated throughout the song. The verses tell different stories of drunken fights and brawls, with the opening verse mentioning a man named O'Leary who the singer gave "his head a crack" and puked on. The second verse talks about Johnus and Patty, who get punched until their eyes turn black. The third verse mentions O'Leary and O'Connell, two men who have been drinking for two weeks and when O'Connell spews, they kick his ass and buy another round. The final verse is about the singer going out with O'Leary to a wake, where they drank and ate cake, and O'Malley sang a somber rendition of "Danny Boy" which the singer responded to by kicking O'Malley in the nuts and then having another beer.

@Lurksmith

A year late, but whatever. It's a cover. Captain Tractor's liner notes confirm it was written by Mike McDonald and Dove (of JR Gone Wild) and Wes Borg and Joe Bird (of Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie). They wrote it for a joint live show and later album, Live at the Hyperbole, recorded in '93.

Does anyone know if this is a Captain Tractor original song? I've seen a version by the Mudmen as well, but it seems they did this after Captain Tractor.
