Talking To Yourself
Carly Rae Jepsen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was always invisible
Consequences are difficult to face
Could've been something beautiful, mmm
But you made it impossible to stay

So tell me what you got on your mind
What you got on your mind?
What you got on your mind?
Am I keeping you up at night?
Keeping you up at night?
I'll never let you be, no

Are you thinking of me when you're with somebody else?
Do you talk to me when you're talking to yourself?
Are you reaching for me making love to someone else?
Do you talk to me (to me)
When you're talking to yourself, self?
When you're talking to your
Talk to me (to me)
When you're talking to yourself

You were never just miserable
Without taking me with you all the way
Don't it hit you subliminal?
Now that I'm not the only one who's taking the blame?

So tell me, what you got on your mind?
What you got on your mind?
What you got on your mind?
Am I keeping you up at night?
Keeping you up at night?
I'll never let you be, no

Are you thinking of me when you're with somebody else?
Do you talk to me when you're talking to yourself?
Are you reaching for me making love to someone else?
Do you talk to me (to me)
When you're talking to yourself, self?
When you're talking to your
Talk to me (to me)
When you're talking to your

Are you thinking of me?
Does it kill you that you're thinking of me?

Are you thinking of me when you're with somebody else?
Do you talk to me when you're talking to yourself?
Are you reaching for me, making love to someone else?
Do you talk to me (to me)
When you're talking to yourself, self?
When you're talking to your
Talk to me (to me)
When you're talking to yourself, self
When you're talking to your

Talk to me (to me)
When you're talking to yourself

Overall Meaning

Carly Rae Jepsen's song "Talking to Yourself" is a reflection on a relationship that has ended. The song's lyrics suggest that the relationship could have been beautiful, but it was made impossible to continue. The singer appears to be seeking closure and trying to understand the situation, asking the ex-partner questions like "Are you thinking of me when you're with somebody else?" and "Do you talk to me when you're talking to yourself?"

The chorus is especially poignant with its repetition of these questions, as if the singer is stuck in a loop, unable to move on from the relationship. There's a sense of desperation in the way Jepsen sings the words, emphasizing certain lyrics to convey her emotional state more clearly. The song captures the feelings of heartbreak, loss, and confusion that often come with the end of a relationship.

Overall, "Talking to Yourself" is a moving and relatable song that speaks to the complexities of love and loss. It's a reminder that even when a relationship ends, the pain and longing can linger on for a long time.

@Matheus Costa I said it myself after listening so many times to this track, it is giving me This Kiss Vibess all over again and I love it. Kiss is my favorite album of hers.

@David Monrreal Jr If it makes you feel better, she just played a new song in Philly last weekend that had BIG Tug of War vibes. Much more acoustic, stripped down. Not sure if it'll sound exactly the same on the album but I really enjoyed it live. This album (from what we've heard so far) seems to be her experimenting with different styles on each track, so hopefully some of those Tug of War vibes do make a return!

SentientSkittle

@David Monrreal Jr I heard a lot of Tug of War in Western Wind! We must not forget about it 🙏

That drop delay into “self” at the end of the chorus. One of the most perfect pop moments of this year. Thank you CRJ
