King's major success began in the 1960s when she and her first husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote more than two dozen chart hits, many of which have become standards, for numerous artists. She has continued writing for other artists since then. King's success as a performer in her own right did not come until the 1970s, when she sang her own songs, accompanying herself on the piano, in a series of albums and concerts. After experiencing commercial disappointment with her debut album Writer, King scored her breakthrough with the album Tapestry, which topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971 and remained on the charts for more than six years.
King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years. Her record sales were estimated at more than 75 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a performer and songwriter. She is the recipient of the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the first woman to be so honored. She is also a 2015 Kennedy Center Honoree.

Change In Mind Change Of Heart

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We ought to try to face the fact
The things we thought had value
They've all been taken back
We've been losing track of time
But time's no easy mark
I can see you've got a change in mind
But what we need is a change of heart
I can see you've got a change in mind
But what we need is a change of heart
You and me
It seems that we've been holding out
The things that once held meaning
We're no longer sure about
We've been moving down the line
Losing what time we've got
And since you say you've had a change in mind
Why don't you try a little change of heart
I can see you've got a change in mind
But what we need is a change of heart
Now I'm not asking anymore of you
Than I ask of myself
Oh, but when I say we need a new approach
Well, I don't mean to someone else
Change, they say
It's the only way we grow
Oh, but the change we're showing
Let me tell you I just don't know
Seems to me that we could find some
Other way to start
Beginning with a change, a change in mind
And ending with a change, a change of heart
Oh, begin it with a change, a change in mind
But end it with a change, a change of heart
The lyrics to Carole King's song "Change In Mind Change Of Heart" are about a realization of how one's values and priorities have shifted over time. The singer of the song is facing the fact that the things that once seemed important to them are no longer meaningful. The lines "We've been losing track of time / But time's no easy mark" indicate that time is precious and should not be wasted on things that do not bring joy or purpose. The singer acknowledges that their partner has also undergone a change in mindset, but recognizes that what is truly needed is a change of heart. It is not enough to simply change one's mind - a true transformation requires a deeper change of perspective and values.
The chorus of the song emphasizes this message: "I can see you've got a change in mind / But what we need is a change of heart". This suggests that the singer not only wants their partner to reevaluate their priorities, but also hopes for a rekindling of the emotional connection between them. The singer recognizes that change can be difficult and requires effort, but they also believe that it is necessary for growth and improvement. The lines "Change, they say / It's the only way we grow" indicate a willingness to embrace change and move forward, even if the path ahead is uncertain.
