King's major success began in the 1960s when she and her first husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote more than two dozen chart hits, many of which have become standards, for numerous artists. She has continued writing for other artists since then. King's success as a performer in her own right did not come until the 1970s, when she sang her own songs, accompanying herself on the piano, in a series of albums and concerts. After experiencing commercial disappointment with her debut album Writer, King scored her breakthrough with the album Tapestry, which topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971 and remained on the charts for more than six years.
King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years. Her record sales were estimated at more than 75 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a performer and songwriter. She is the recipient of the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the first woman to be so honored. She is also a 2015 Kennedy Center Honoree.

Carole King Lyrics

Why get in your car and drive it down to the same old place
Well, do you ever wonder what it's all about
Something they call freedom of choice
That you should not live without
Me, I'm feelin' lazy
And it's me that's on the line
But I've been crazy for a long time
You take your action on weekends at a time
But you can make all week your own
If you set your mind
You see security in the chrome American dream
But I don't believe in livin' in the middle
With available extremes
Now there's many people see the truth in what I'm sayin'
But it's hard to make up your mind with a programmed brain
You who know better, but you're just gonna wait and see
Why don't you do it now, you may never get another
Opportunity
The lyrics to "Crazy" by Carole King are reflective of the frustration and dissatisfaction that many people feel with the monotony and routine of everyday life. The singer in the song questions the purpose and meaning of their daily activities, asking why they continue to wake up and go to the same job or place every day. The idea of "freedom of choice" is introduced and the importance of not taking it for granted is emphasized.
The chorus of the song reveals the singer's own sense of feeling trapped, but also accepting of their own insanity. King sings, "Me, I'm feelin' lazy, and it's me that's on the line. I may be crazy, but I've been crazy for a long time." This phrase suggests that the singer is aware of their own issues and perhaps has chosen to embrace them rather than fight against them.
The second verse of the song is a call to action for listeners, encouraging them to not only make the most of their weekends but take control of their lives during the rest of the week as well. The idea that many Americans see the "American Dream" as being synonymous with owning a car and having material possessions is challenged as well. The singer wants to live outside of the extremes and not simply fall into a middle-class trap. The final lines of the song urge listeners to not wait for change but make it happen now before it's too late.
Overall, "Crazy" by Carole King is a song that challenges people to question their daily routine and strive for more. The lyrics encourage listeners to not settle for a life of security and monotony but seek out their own definition of freedom and happiness.
