King's major success began in the 1960s when she and her first husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote more than two dozen chart hits, many of which have become standards, for numerous artists. She has continued writing for other artists since then. King's success as a performer in her own right did not come until the 1970s, when she sang her own songs, accompanying herself on the piano, in a series of albums and concerts. After experiencing commercial disappointment with her debut album Writer, King scored her breakthrough with the album Tapestry, which topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971 and remained on the charts for more than six years.
King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years. Her record sales were estimated at more than 75 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a performer and songwriter. She is the recipient of the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the first woman to be so honored. She is also a 2015 Kennedy Center Honoree.

Dancin' With Tears In My Eyes
Carole King Lyrics

Even when I'm feeling down
So every night I go out on the town
Circulating around
Well, I thought I could forget about you
But every night I find
It's not as easy as I thought it would be
To dance you out of my mind
You've got me dancin' with tears in my eyes
Dancin' with tears in my eyes
You've got me dancin' with a hurt in my soul
I can't control my emotions
Ever since we said our goodbyes
Don't you know you can find me any old time
Dancin' with tears in my eyes
Dancin' with tears in my eyes
Dancin' with tears in my eyes
Dancin' with tears in my eyes
Now anything can happen in this day and age
Just take a look at me
My body keeps moving to the happy beat
While my spirit's in misery
You can't see it with the strobe lights flashing
No, I don't look out of place
But there's a whole different picture you'll see of me
When you get a look at my face
You'll see me dancin' with tears in my eyes
Dancin' with tears in my eyes
You'll see me dancin' with a hurt in my soul
I can't control my emotions
Ever since we said our goodbyes
Don't you know you can find me, you know you can find me
Don't you know you can find me any old time
Dancin' with tears in my eyes
Dancin' with tears in my eyes
Dancin' with tears in my eyes
Dancin' with tears in my eyes
The lyrics to Carole King's song "Dancin' with Tears in My Eyes" describe the struggle of moving on from a past relationship. The singer is someone who doesn't like to stay at home when feeling down but would rather go out and distract themselves from their heartbreak. They thought they could forget about their ex-lover by going out and "dancing," but every time they try, they end up being reminded of them again, causing them to cry and feel a sense of loss. The singer acknowledges that even though they're trying to move on, they can't control how they feel and how they are reminded of what they had with their ex-lover. Despite their efforts to hide their pain, they know that with one look at their face, the truth will be revealed. The song portrays the turmoil one goes through when trying to move past a relationship, but realizing that moving on isn't always as easy as it seems.
