King's major success began in the 1960s when she and her first husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote more than two dozen chart hits, many of which have become standards, for numerous artists. She has continued writing for other artists since then. King's success as a performer in her own right did not come until the 1970s, when she sang her own songs, accompanying herself on the piano, in a series of albums and concerts. After experiencing commercial disappointment with her debut album Writer, King scored her breakthrough with the album Tapestry, which topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971 and remained on the charts for more than six years.
King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years. Her record sales were estimated at more than 75 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a performer and songwriter. She is the recipient of the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the first woman to be so honored. She is also a 2015 Kennedy Center Honoree.

Oh No Not My Baby
Carole King Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I didn't believe a single word was true.
I told them all I had faith in you.
I kept right on sayin':
Oh, no, not my baby.
Oh, no, not my sweet baby.
You're not like all those other girls
Who play with man's hearts like they were toys.
My mama told me, "Son,when rumors spread
That there is truth somewhere
And you should use your head."
But I sure didn't listen to what she said;
Don't you know I kept right on sayin':
Oh, no, not my baby.
Oh, no, not my sweet baby.
You're not like all those other girls
Who lead you on and tell you lies, no, not my baby.
Tell me, baby,
I don't believe what they're sayin', no.
Oh, no, not my baby.
Oh no, not my sweet baby.
Oh, no, not my baby.
Oh no, not my sweet baby.
Not my baby, not my baby
Not my baby, not my baby, not my baby
Not my, not my sweet, sweet baby.
Not my baby, not my baby
Not my baby, not my baby, not my baby
Not my, not my sweet, sweet baby.
Not my baby, not my baby,
Not my baby, not my sweet, sweet baby.
Oh, no, not my baby.
Oh no, not my sweet baby.
Oh, no, not my baby.
The lyrics to Carole King’s “Oh No Not My Baby” depict a protagonist who refuses to listen to the rumors regarding her lover’s infidelity. Despite hearing from friends and family that her partner has someone else, she keeps denying the allegations and defending her love. She believes that her partner is different from other unfaithful women that toy with men's hearts. As the song progresses, it becomes clear that the singer is struggling to come to terms with the truth, and she attempts to convince herself and others that her partner wouldn't betray her.
The song captures the denial and hope that people often experience when dealing with a difficult relationship. The singer’s refusal to believe the rumors illustrates the fear of facing the possibility of heartbreak. The lyrics show how individuals can become attached to a person, making it difficult to accept the loss. The song highlights the themes of love, insecurity, and the fear of losing someone, and the unwillingness to face the reality of a broken relationship.

When my friends told me you had someone new,
When my friends informed me about your new partner,
I didn't believe a single word was true.
I didn't trust what they were saying,
I told them all I had faith in you.
I assured them that I trusted you,
I kept right on sayin':
I continuously repeated the phrase:
Oh, no, not my baby.
Oh no, you can't possibly be untrue to me,
Oh, no, not my sweet baby.
Oh no, my special partner can't be dishonest,
You're not like all those other girls
You're different from all those other ladies,
Who play with man's hearts like they were toys.
Who manipulate men's emotions easily,
My mama told me, "Son,when rumors spread
My mother advised me:
That there is truth somewhere
That there is always a grain of truth in rumors,
And you should use your head."
And you should think logically,
But I sure didn't listen to what she said;
But I ignored her advice,
Don't you know I kept right on sayin':
Don't you know I continued repeating the phrase:
You're not like all those other girls
You're different from all those other ladies,
Who lead you on and tell you lies, no, not my baby.
Who mislead you and lie to you, but not my partner,
Tell me, baby,
Let me know, my dear,
I don't believe what they're sayin', no.
I don't trust what others are saying,
Not my baby, not my baby
You can't be unfaithful to me,
Not my baby, not my baby, not my baby
You're my special partner who couldn't be untrue to me,
Not my, not my sweet, sweet baby.
You are a genuine, sincere partner,
Not my baby, not my baby
You couldn't be dishonest or unfaithful,
Not my baby, not my baby, not my baby
You are my special person who couldn't be untrue to me,
Not my, not my sweet, sweet baby.
You are my partner, and I trust you completely,
Not my baby, not my baby,
You always have been and always will be my faithful partner,
Not my baby, not my sweet, sweet baby.
You are my special person, and I love you,
Oh, no, not my baby.
Oh no, you couldn't be untrue to me,
