King's major success began in the 1960s when she and her first husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote more than two dozen chart hits, many of which have become standards, for numerous artists. She has continued writing for other artists since then. King's success as a performer in her own right did not come until the 1970s, when she sang her own songs, accompanying herself on the piano, in a series of albums and concerts. After experiencing commercial disappointment with her debut album Writer, King scored her breakthrough with the album Tapestry, which topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971 and remained on the charts for more than six years.
King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years. Her record sales were estimated at more than 75 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a performer and songwriter. She is the recipient of the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the first woman to be so honored. She is also a 2015 Kennedy Center Honoree.

Feeling Sad Tonight
Carole King Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But everything's alright
And we'll find some other place to go
Feeling sad tonight
But everything's alright
Let's turn all our cares down low
Come on, let's go downtown
Running down the bright night
Driving a little too fast
Oh, I'm counting on you
Sitting on a bar stool
I'm a fool
Always feeling half-right and half-safe
Halfway dreaming of some safe place away from school
Oh, I'm counting on you
Silly sometimes
I'm a fool
Feeling sad tonight
But everything's alright
And we'll find some other place to go
Feeling sad tonight
But everything's alright
Let's turn all the lights and all our cares down low
There is a space between us
Which we cross
To touch each other softly
And so make up our loss
Some things take so long to learn
No matter how we try
Still we try and keep it open
And we get by
Feeling sad tonight
But everything's alright
And we'll find some other place to go
Feeling sad tonight
Carole King's Feeling Sad Tonight is a song that perfectly portrays how one deals with feeling down and low. At first glance, it may seem like a song about a couple dealing with relationship troubles, but on closer observation, one can see that it is a song about finding comfort and solace in each other or another person when things are not going as planned. The singer expresses her emotions by stating that she is feeling sad tonight, but everything is alright. The use of contrasting words and emotions shows how one can feel two things at once, like being sad but still okay. The lyrics also depict how escaping into the nightlife and spending time with someone can help to ease one's mind from worries and responsibilities, as seen in the verse, "Let's turn all our cares down low."
The chorus repeats the idea that the situation is not ideal, but they will find another place to go and try to feel better. The bridge highlights the distance between two individuals and how it takes effort to cross the gap and connect, but it is worth it. The sentiment of the song is clear, as it provides assurance that even when things feel rough, we can turn to others for comfort and support.
