King's major success began in the 1960s when she and her first husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote more than two dozen chart hits, many of which have become standards, for numerous artists. She has continued writing for other artists since then. King's success as a performer in her own right did not come until the 1970s, when she sang her own songs, accompanying herself on the piano, in a series of albums and concerts. After experiencing commercial disappointment with her debut album Writer, King scored her breakthrough with the album Tapestry, which topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971 and remained on the charts for more than six years.
King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years. Her record sales were estimated at more than 75 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a performer and songwriter. She is the recipient of the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the first woman to be so honored. She is also a 2015 Kennedy Center Honoree.

It Might As WeII Rain Until September

What can I say?
How can I tell you how much I miss you?
The weather here has been as nice as it can be
Although it doesn't really matter much to me
For all the fun I'll have while you're so far away
It might as well rain until September
I don't need sunny skies for things I have to do
'Cause I stay home the whole day long and think of you
As far as I'm concerned each day's a rainy day
So it might as well rain until September
My friends look forward to their picnics on the beach
Yes, everybody loves the summertime
But you know, darling, while your arms are out of reach
The summer isn't any friend of mine
It doesn't matter whether skies are grey or blue
It's raining in my heart 'cause I can't be with you
I'm only living for the day you're home to stay
So it might as well rain until September
(September, September)
Oh, it might as well rain until September
In "It Might as Well Rain Until September," Carole King laments the absence of a loved one with a melancholic, yearning tone. The song begins with King grappling with writer's block, unsure of how to express the depth of her emotions or how to convey her longing for the one who is gone. She uses the weather as a metaphor for her mood; while the sun may be shining outside, her inner world is overcast and gray without her beloved.
King goes on to express that the weather doesn't really matter to her because, no matter what the forecast, her heart is heavy and aching. She spends her days at home, consumed with thoughts of the one she misses, unable to find joy or meaning in anything else. Even as her friends enjoy picnics and other summertime pleasures, King is unable to do so because she feels incomplete without her beloved.
The chorus makes it clear that King's one wish is to be reunited with the one who has left her. She is willing to endure endless rain, dreary days, and autumn chills if it means she can be with her loved one once again. It's a classic tale of longing and separation, with King's evocative lyrics perfectly capturing the sadness and desperation of unrequited love.

James Taylor was only 22 years old here. Crazy how time flies. Carole's voice, just amazing.

He reminds me of a young Dan Fogelberg, similar age & same era but Dan was only just starting in the music business in 1971.

Her voice is lovely, but--in my humble opinion--that's not really what makes her so excellent (many others surpass her in sheer vocal ability). It's the songwriting and the emotion.
