King's major success began in the 1960s when she and her first husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote more than two dozen chart hits, many of which have become standards, for numerous artists. She has continued writing for other artists since then. King's success as a performer in her own right did not come until the 1970s, when she sang her own songs, accompanying herself on the piano, in a series of albums and concerts. After experiencing commercial disappointment with her debut album Writer, King scored her breakthrough with the album Tapestry, which topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971 and remained on the charts for more than six years.
King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years. Her record sales were estimated at more than 75 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a performer and songwriter. She is the recipient of the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the first woman to be so honored. She is also a 2015 Kennedy Center Honoree.

Breathing in the carnival air
That old street of dreams has got my head spinning
Being there at the pleasure fair
I'm no stranger to danger
He's been my lifelong friend
I can feel the pulse of the city
Midnight flyer, higher and higher
And the sun won't rise till five
And I don't care if I'm spending my money
At least I feel alive
Midnight flyer
Suburban village has gone to sleep
But I'm just waking up
The night holds a promise I intend to keep
To fill my loving cup
I know it's a long shot
But tonight I'm gonna take a chance
I can feel the rhythm of the city
It's my turn to dance
Midnight flyer, higher and higher
And the sun won't rise till five
I don't care if I'm spending my money
At least I feel alive
Midnight flyer, I'm on fire
Nothin's gonna stand in my way
I'm gonna keep on moving to the beat of the city
Until the break of day
Midnight flyer, I'm on fire
Midnight flyer, I'm on fire
Nothin's gonna stand in my way
Midnight flyer
The song Midnight Flyer by Carole King seems to be about the excitement and danger of living in a city at night. The singer describes the flashing neon lights of the city, the carnival atmosphere, and the head-spinning effects of being in this environment. The lyrics suggest that the singer is no stranger to danger, and that the pulse of the city is something they can feel. The chorus is about the Midnight Flyer, someone who is out all night and into the early morning, spending money and feeling alive.
The second verse suggests that the suburban village has gone to sleep, but the singer is just waking up. They describe the night as holding a promise that they intend to keep, and they are going to take a chance. The rhythm of the city seems to be calling them, and they intend to dance until the break of day.
Overall, the song is about living life to the fullest, taking chances, feeling alive, and being unafraid of the unknown. It is a celebration of the thrill of being out in a city at night, in the midst of all the lights, energy, and excitement.
