No longer afraid for the others
Hurrying through the tall grass
Or the faces laughing on the beach
Sleep now, you do not hear the dry wind pray
Or the children play a game called soldiers
sleep now, alone in the sleeves of grief
And your flesh touching god
To the chatter and backslapping of christ
Meeting the heroes of war
Sleep now, you do not hear the dry wind pray
Or the children play a game called soldiers
sleep now, your words have passed the lights
Shining from the east
And the sound of flak raping graves and emptying the seasons
Sleep now, sleep now
You do not hear the dry wind pray
Or the children play a game called soldiers
In "Sleep Now" by Caroline Lavelle, the lyrics paint a picture of a person who has faced and survived war, but who is now left to grapple with the trauma that remains. The opening lines are haunting as Lavelle describes the subject listening to their own blood moving in the quiet wind, previously being full of fear for others. The next lines describe a world still moving without the subject, people rushing through tall grass and laughing on the beach, unknowing of the realities this person has experienced.
The chorus, repeated throughout the song, is a call to sleep, to let go of the weight of the world and the experiences that linger. The second verse speaks to the person's loneliness in their grief, hearing only their own clothes and flesh touching in the stillness. The reference to "backslapping of Christ" speaks to the subject's religious beliefs, and possibly the disillusionment they feel with a higher power, after experiencing such horror.
The final verse is the most surreal, with the person's words passing through the lights of the east, referencing a metaphorical journey towards a more peaceful place. The sound of flak, gunfire, is described as "raping graves", possibly a commentary on the destruction of history and life that war leaves in its wake. The final chorus repeats the call to sleep, to find reprieve from the trauma they have experienced. Lavelle's use of rich imagery and powerful metaphors lend the song a sense of timelessness, making it feel applicable to anyone who has experienced loss or trauma.

I came across your channel yesterday. I have the hardest time to fall asleep because my thoughts keep running wild sometimes and this helped so much. I immediately felt relaxed and calm, at first I wasn't going to go through the whole video since I was laying on my yoga mat before bedtime but then suddenly I was asleep.
