Side by Side
Carroll Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Love goes flying off the rails
You never know what sets it off
Love don't hide behind that veil
Turn your head lose it all

On your side I'm never giving up
On love that's never seen enough
So onward we go into this night

It's like I'm buried in the sand
Fear of losing took my eyes
It's so hard to understand
What keeps me using this disguise

On your side I'm never giving up
On love that's never seen enough
So onward we go into this night

On your side I'm never giving up

On love that's never seen enough
So onward we go into this night

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Carroll's song Side by Side allude to the difficulty and unpredictability of love. The line "Love goes flying off the rails" suggests that love can be erratic and go astray unexpectedly. The next line, "You never know what sets it off," reinforces this idea that love can be volatile and difficult to understand. The line "Love don't hide behind that veil/Turn your head lose it all" implies that we should be open and vulnerable with our love, and not hide behind protective barriers. Essentially, the song is calling for us to take a bold step, forsaking fear and doubt, and pursue love with abandon.

The metaphor of being buried in the sand is used to represent the pitfalls of fear and losing hope. The line "Fear of losing took my eyes" suggests that fear can sometimes prevent us from seeing the beauty and potential in love. The singer acknowledges the confusion and disguises that love sometimes dons, but he remains steadfast in his commitment to pursuing true and unwavering love. The repeated line "On your side I'm never giving up/ On love that's never seen enough/ So onward we go into this night" is a proclamation of the singer's unwavering faith in the power of love and represents the journey of two people towards an elusive but fulfilling destination.

So glad you have this uploaded. It's one of my favorite albums (I have the LP, but never had a way to carry it with me!)
Great show, great performers... and really wonderful renditions of some great old standards!
Thank you!

I never knew this album existed awsome! Love the show!

ChanelNo19

This was so much fun! I can remember another album from around the same time of audio clips of some of the funnier bits on "All in the Family" (I think it actually made it relatively high on the album charts), but I never knew this one existed until recently. Jean was probably wishing that she could have sung in her real voice (she had a beautiful singing voice in real life), rather than in Edith's voice.
