Wilson's repertoire includes both jazz and blues standards and renditions of pop and rock songs. Her contralto voice has been described as bluesy and sultry, and the style of her music ranges from swing to funk to bossa nova. Many of the songs she covers are by artists who usually record in other genres.
Wilson counts the late Miles Davis as one of her greatest influences. In 1989 she performed as the opening act for Davis at the JVC Jazz Festival in Chicago. In 1999 she produced Traveling Miles as a tribute to Davis. The album developed from a series of jazz concerts that she performed at Lincoln Center in November 1997 in Davis's honor and includes three selections based on Davis's own compositions, in which Wilson adapted the original themes.

I Want to Be Loved
Cassandra Wilson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Your voice is like a heaven above
The touch of your hand drives me insane
But baby, I wants to be loved
I'm crazy about every little thing you do
I cherish the way that you hug
Your kiss is so sweet, honey, it can't be beat
Every time I ask you for a date
You don't come at all, or you're mighty late
I ask you to dance; take a little spin
You say "Wait a minute Ma'am, bang bang...here come my friends"
I love the way you walk when you pass me by
Even when you try to shrug
You kill me, honey darling when you give me the eye
But baby, I wants to be loved
In "I Want to Be Loved" by Cassandra Wilson, the singer expresses her deep desire for love and affection from her significant other. The verse "The spark in your eyes sets my soul on fire" suggests that the singer is drawn to the passion she sees in her partner's eyes, and that it ignites something within her that she cannot ignore. She goes on to describe how she feels about his voice and touch, which she finds heavenly and maddening respectively. Despite all of these intense feelings, the singer is still not fully satisfied, and she explicitly states that she wants to be loved.
The chorus of the song repeats this sentiment in a slightly different way, with the singer emphasizing the fact that she is crazy about her partner, cherishes his hugs, and loves his kiss, yet still longs for the feeling of being loved. The second verse delves deeper into some of the obstacles that the singer is facing in her quest for love. She describes her frustration with her partner's unreliability, such as when he fails to show up for a date or arrives late. She also notes that he prioritizes his friends over spending time with her, which is a source of disappointment.
