Lamont
Catch 22 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sad is the man who drinks with himself
To fog up the day that precedes
From sad then to happy
From happy to bitter
That bitter old man is me

Hey (hey), drink it all away
I said hey (hey), drink it all away
And I dance for the light of the stars in the sky
And sleep all alone tonight

One for my headaches, 2 for the road
3 for my family and 4 for the show
5 for my sorrows, 6 for my wrongs
7 to hell with this song

Hey (hey), drink it all away
I said hey (hey), drink it all away
And I dance for the light of the stars in the sky
And sleep all alone tonight

Well everyone feels the need to belong
Everyone feels the need for a cause

The forces of nature are naturally sure
But where's the effect? where's the effect?

Overall Meaning

The song "Lamont's Lament" by Catch 22 is a melancholic reflection on the destructive impact of alcohol and the resulting loneliness it brings. The opening lines "Sad is the man who drinks with himself/ To fog up the day that precedes" depict how alcohol can become a coping mechanism for individuals seeking to escape from their reality. The sadness that emanates from the lyrics stems from the fact that the singer of the song repeatedly shifts between feeling happy and bitter, a cycle that has left him feeling bitter and alone.

The chorus "Hey (hey), drink it all away/ I said hey (hey), drink it all away/ And I dance for the light of the stars in the sky/ And sleep all alone tonight" showcases the coping mechanism of the singer: drinking away his sorrows and dancing under the light of stars. The repetition of 'drink it all away' reinforces the idea that alcohol is a temporary escape from reality, and dancing alone under the stars shows how the singer's reliance on alcohol results in loneliness.

The lines "One for my headaches, 2 for the road/ 3 for my family and 4 for the show/ 5 for my sorrows, 6 for my wrongs/ 7 to hell with this song" highlight how the singer has used alcohol for various reasons, including to relieve headaches, to cope with family issues, and to deal with guilt. The final line of the verse "7 to hell with this song" showcases the singer's desire to forget the cycle of drinking and despair that he finds himself in.

Overall, "Lamont's Lament" is a powerful commentary on the negative impact of alcohol on individuals and society as a whole, and how it can lead to loneliness and isolation.

Such a terrible album, ended with one of their finest songs. I'd have loved it if this was a steer into the following album - a rough and aggressive venture into a semi ska-core sounds. Alas, the follow up was as disappointing as this Dinosaur Sounds.
