Shakespeare
Cause & Effect Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As the colors swim in circles
And rhythms shimmer through the chandeliers
As the gods send gifts of balance
And things of distance become things of near

As the sky reaches burnout
And the crowds disappear
In the temple I'll be waiting
For my angel to appear

Where did you get your wings my angel
Where did you get that light within your eyes
Where did you get your wings my angel

Push me up towards the sky
As the stars move around me
And shoot towards the edge of time
As the gods send gifts of penance

To relieve the pain of my things of crime
As Lucy touches diamonds
Repeating number nine
In the temple I'll be waiting

For my angel so sublime
And I'm sitting in Shakespeare's garden underneath a tree

Wishing that my missing angel could come back to me
To help me breathe (come on, lets go)s

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Cause & Effect's song "In Shakespeare" describe a moment of spiritual awakening and yearning. The different elements mentioned in the song, such as colors, rhythms, and the sky, seem to merge into a transcendental experience, where the singer is waiting for his "angel" to appear. The angel is described as having "wings" and a "light within your eyes," suggesting a divine, otherworldly presence. The singer longs to be lifted up towards the sky and to be relieved of the pain of their "things of crime," as if seeking redemption or forgiveness.

The reference to Shakespeare in the title and the final lines of the song point to a sense of romanticism and idealism, as the singer sits in a garden underneath a tree, wishing for their missing angel to return and save them. The song's lyrics seem to blend religious and secular imagery, evoking a sense of awe and longing for something beyond this world.

Overall, “In Shakespeare” is a song about spiritual yearning and the search for a higher meaning in life. The vivid and dreamlike imagery used in the lyrics adds to the sense of transcendent experience, while the singer's desire for their missing angel reflects a universal longing for connection and purpose.

Such an underrated group. I never get tired of their music. As well as their most recent music from a few years ago.

Blackthorn

How did this band not become way bigger?

Wow...memories rush back! I was probably 16 when I last heard this, around 1993. Had the album on CD at the time. All but forgotten.

Cosmo Traumatika

Absolute genius group. It's so painful realizing why they were silenced.

Been looking for this album for almost 20 years to no avail until NOW. Thank you. Brings back memories of my college years.

Born and raised in N.Y.C. then moved. As I got older I lend an ear to other types of music. This band got me!!! Music is life .Thanks for posting this song.

It's good to know that I'll love this whole album and it's interesting to note you don't get as many albums like that anymore. It's nice the way the must is soft so you can have it on in the background, but of course it's better when it's loud and it'll still sound nice. This music reminds me of the 1980's because it's stylised in that way I think particularly the voice reminds me of that era and singers had a voice like that as well though the electronics used don't sound dated at all to me.
