The syncopated bouncy wobbly-kneed timing is what makes this so irresistable. And notice how Chuck delivers the lyrics in various places in each bar. It's absolutely infectious and it's so so so so hard to duplicate!!!!

What people don't realize is that Chuck Berry was not a songwriter. He was a storyteller. This song proves it. Each of his compositions is a succinct self-contained tale, usually featuring a protagonist and with a definite story arc. His talent is more akin to Chaucer or O. Henry than to Little Richard or Fats Domino. His work will live on for centuries.

Chuck's genius -- a COMMERCIAL genius, at that -- was to realize that you could write civil rights protest songs as much as you wanted, and starve: OR write songs about being young: a little tongue-in-cheek, let the audience in on the joke, and be the soundtrack for the last half of the 20th century,

That's why he changed Johnny B. Goode from "that little colored boy" who could play, to a "country boy"; it's why Sweet Little Sixteen and Nadine and You Never Can Tell are so universal. He crafted 'em that way on purpose and led by example.

About 13 yrs ago I saw Chuck live here in STL, and he just brought the house down as a surprise act at a benefit concert I was at. No one cared who else was playing once he came out, he is so charismatic wow.

Yeah! Good to see Chuck Berry on video. He developed that stage walk strut across the stage. I believe they call it the "duck walk". Others have tried to do it, but no one can do it like the original. Chuck.. Rest in peace brother, and thanks for your music and inspiration to other rock performers.
