Desperado
Celtic Thunder Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
You been out ridin' fences for so long now
Oh, you're a hard one
I know that you got your reasons
These things that are pleasin' you
Can hurt you somehow

Don't you draw the queen of diamonds, boy
She'll beat you if she's able
You know the queen of hearts is always your best bet

Now it seems to me, some fine things
Have been laid upon your table
But you only want the ones that you can't get

Desperado, oh, you ain't gettin' no younger
Your pain and your hunger, they're drivin' you home
And freedom, oh freedom well, that's just some people talkin'
Your prison is walking through this world all alone

Don't your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won't snow and the sun won't shine
It's hard to tell the night time from the day
You're losin' all your highs and lows
Ain't it funny how the feeling goes away?

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate
It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you

You better let somebody love you
You better let somebody, before it's too late.

Overall Meaning

In this song, Celtic Thunder addresses a man who has been riding fences for too long, and is now losing touch with the reality of living. The singer is a "hard one," with his own reasons for being the way he is, but he continues to pursue only what he cannot seem to get. The queen of diamonds is a metaphor for temptation, warning him that he continues to chase something that will ultimately beat him. The queen of hearts, on the other hand, is the safer option, and the one that will bring him the most happiness.

The song tells us that the singer is not getting any younger, and that his pain and hunger have driven him to a place called "home", which is actually more of a prison than anything else. He is trapped in a world where there is no difference between day and night, where the feeling of being alive is slipping away from him. The song ends, calling him to come to his senses and "open the gate" to someone who may love him, while reminding him that it might be too late if he waits any longer.

I like Ryan's version the best of any I've heard. He was really something - 28 years old, beautiful to behold, loaded with talent. A bright future awaited him.

Like a lot of the Eagles songs, this one is my favorite. I never heard it sung with such feeling and emotion until now. Ryan does such a a fantastic job singing country-style songs. Want to hear more like that from him besides Garth Brooks covers. Maybe some George Strait? ๐Ÿ˜Š
