Desafinado
Charlie Byrd/Stan Getz Lyrics

Saiba que isso em mim provoca imensa dor
Só privilegiados têm ouvido igual ao seu
Eu possuo apenas o que Deus me deu
No fundo do peito bate calado
Que no peito dos desafinados
também bate um coração
The lyrics of Desafinado describe the pain and frustration that the singer feels when told that they are out of tune or not musical. They explain that having perfect pitch is a rare gift and not everyone possesses it. The lyrics urge the listener not to judge them based on their musical ability as they argue that what they are playing is bossa nova and it is a natural part of their identity. The line "o que você não sabe nem sequer pressente é que os desafinados também têm um coração" (what you don't know or even realize is that the out of tune also have a heart) serves as a reminder that even the slightly less-than-perfect can have deep emotions and feelings.
The lyrics also touch on themes of betrayal and ingratitude when the singer mentions that they captured a photograph of the person they loved but it revealed their ungrateful behavior. However, the singer reaffirms their love and declares that it is the greatest love that one can find. The song ends on a hopeful note, reminding the listener that even those who are out of tune also have a beating heart in their chest.

This song will always remind me of my father. When I was in 6th grade this was one of the only CDs he would ever play driving me to school in the morning. He would occasionally pick me up on Friday afternoons when he could get off work early. I'm taken back to those afternoons right now. I'm glad my father is still with us. Every day is a gift.

Very nostalgic for me as a freshman in high school when my mother, a music lover, bought this album. I listened to it over and over again myself, intrigued by the unusual rhythms and the combined sound of Stan Getz’s sax and Charlie Byrd’s guitar. Still love hearing it after all these decades.

Grew up with this album and many others. My dad played jazz guitar. Hated it back then. Love it now. Brings back great memories

my brother (buddy deppenschmidt) played with Charlie Byrd trio for several years when I was a young teen; went to S. America on a state department tour and picked up "the beat' from local players while there...taught it to Stan Getz' drummer and the rest is history.

One of the catchiest melodies of all-time. I remember when I first got into this CD around the mid-1990s (I know, I'm young) I couldn't get this song out of my head. I still occasionally find myself quietly humming this terrific song as I'm going about my day.
