The Isle of Innisfree
Charlie Landsborough Lyrics

I've met some folks who say that I'm a dreamer
And I've no doubt there's truth in what they say
But sure a body's bound to be a dreamer
When all the things he loves are far away.
And precious things are dreams onto an exile
They take him o'er the land across the sea
Especially when it happens he's an exile
From that dear lovely Isle of Innisfree.

And when the moonlight peeps across the rooftops
Of this great city wondrous tho' it be
I scarcely feel its wonder or its laughter
I'm once again back home in Innisfree.

I wander o'er green hills thro' dreamy valleys
And find a peace no other land could know
I hear the birds make music fit for angels
And watch the rivers laughing as they flow.
And then into a humble shack I wander
My dear old home, and tenderly behold
The folks I love around the turf fire gathered
On bended knees their rosary is told.

But dreams don't last
Tho' dreams are not forgotten
And soon I'm back to stern reality

But tho' they paved the footways here with gold dust
I still would choose the Isle of Innisfree.

Overall Meaning

The first verse of the song sets the stage for the rest of the lyrics. The singer acknowledges that he is a dreamer and that his dreams are far away from him. He mentions that for an exile like himself who loves certain things, those things become precious dreams that take him across the sea and the land. He specifically refers to Innisfree as his dear land of exile, indicating that he has been banished from there, and it is the one place that he longs for.

In the second verse, the moonlight shining on the rooftops of the city doesn't hold the same wonder for him as it should. Instead, he feels transported back to Innisfree where he can find peace as he walks amidst green hills and dreamy valleys. The music of the birds and the laughter of the rivers act as a balm for him. He describes his humble shack, his dear old home, as the place where he finds solace. He sees his loved ones gathered around the turf fire, saying their rosary.

The singer knows that dreams don't last forever and that eventually, he has to return to reality. He recognizes that he is living in a different place now, a city that is covered with gold dust that is meant to entice people. But he pledges his loyalty to Innisfree, his real home, and the place where he finds peace.

Charlie is one of those great singers who bring so much emotion to one of Ireland's greatest songs. The Irish remind me of my community the Italian's. Both nations sing with so much love for their beloved homelands. Us Italian's love the Irish they're very much like us. That's way so many Italian's have married into Irish families. We have a lot in common! No one sings this song like Charlie and some great singers have sung it over the years. I personally prefer Charlie's emotional version it makes you cry, thinking of all those people who left there beloved homeland never to return! Great song sung by a great artist!!
