Hotline Bling
Charlie Puth Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You used to call me on my cell phone
Late night when you need my love
Call me on my cell phone
Late night when you need my love
And I know when that hotline bling
That can only mean one thing
And I know when that hotline bling
That can only mean one thing

Ever since I left the city you
Got a reputation for yourself now
Everybody knows and I feel left out
Girl you got me down, you got me stressed out
'Cause ever since I left the city, you
Started wearing less and goin' out more
Glasses of champagne out on the dance floor
Hangin' with some girls I've never seen before

You used to call me on my cell phone
Late night when you need my love
Call me on my cell phone
Late night when you need my love
And I know when that hotline bling
That can only mean one thing
And I know when that hotline bling
That can only mean one thing

Ever since I left the city, you, you, you
You and me we just don't get along
You make me feel like I did you wrong
Going places where you don't belong
Ever since I left the city, you
You got exactly what you asked for
Running out of pages on your passport
Hanging with some girls I never seen before

You used to call me on my cell phone
Late night when you need my love
Call me on my cell phone
Late night when you need my love
And I know when that hotline bling
That can only mean one thing
And I know when that hotline bling
That can only mean one thing

Overall Meaning

cell phone late at night when you need my love – these lyrics by Charlie Puth & Kehlani ft. Armani White's in "Hotline Bling" are a reflection of a relationship that seems to have gone sour after the male protagonist has left the city. He’s aware that the girl he was with is getting more attention now that he’s not around, and he feels left out. He notes that she’s wearing less, going out more, drinking champagne, and hanging out with new girls he’s never seen before. He felt like he was done wrong and that they don't get along anymore. The chorus, “And I know when that hotline bling, that can only mean one thing,” alludes to the girl calling the singer on the phone when she needs his love. It is unclear whether he is upset or nostalgic when he sings about the hotline bling; however, these lyrics paint the picture of a relationship that has changed significantly since he left the city.

She has truly been one of the new voices
amongst these young singers I really do respect. Great tone and clear as a whistle. But if we are talking about some of the great singers of today I admire I would include the following: Tori Kelly, Ariana Grande, Tamar Braxton, Kehlani, Jazmine Sullivan to name the cream of the the vocal crop :D

I remember listening to this for the first time when they released it on SoundCloud back in 2015 😭 This makes me feel so nostalgic. I would play this during late night long-distance drives with my best friend riding shotgun.
