Charlie Rich Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, that little guy you been seein' him most every day
He shouldn't be allowed to come and take my baby away
Baby why don't you wake up, all we gotta do is make up
Come on baby, don't break up with me

Well, I saw you walkin' with him just the other night
I almost flipped when I saw him squeeze you tight
Baby why don't you wake up, all we gotta do is make up
Come on baby, don't break up with me

Don't you remember all the things that we used to do
Before he came along and looked at you
Don't you remember when you said you loved me so
Baby, now please don't go

And I don't know exactly what I'm gonna do
Because If you like him, and I know he likes you
Baby why don't you wake up, all we gotta do is make up
Come on baby, don't break up with me

Don't you remember all the things that we used so do
Before he came along and looked at you
Don't you remember when you said you loved me so
Baby, now please don't go

And I don't know exactly what I'm gonna do
Because if you like him, and I know he likes you
Baby why don't you wake up, all we gotta do is make up
Come on baby, don't break up with me

Come on baby, don't break up with me
Come on baby, don't break up with me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Charlie Rich's song Who Will The Next Fool Be talks about a man trying to keep his lover from leaving him for another man. He expresses his concern about the other man and how he shouldn't be allowed to take his lover away. He pleads with his lover to remember all the good times they had together and to not break up with him. He even mentions that if she likes the other man, he doesn't know what he's going to do.

The song is a classic example of a lover's plea to remain together, and the desperation of the man's voice is overshadowed only by his commitment to winning his lover back. He talks about how the other man is undeserving of his lover and how he should not be allowed to take her away. He begs his lover to remember all the good times and to not forget the love they shared.

In conclusion, Charlie Rich's Who Will The Next Fool Be is a soulful, sentimental ballad that showcases the insecurity and vulnerability of a man fighting to keep his love alive.

One of the most talented, misunderstood, mislabeled musicians of all time. Charlie Rich tore up rock'a billy, jazz, country, blues and every other genre he touched with soul vigor and a voice that never quit. He is a musician's musician on par with the great Ray Charles. Charlie Rich is a GIANT. This song is testimony to that, Mohair Sam, Don't Put No Headstone On My Grave, Field of Yellow Daisies, Take It On Home, You Never Really Wanted Me, Pictures and Paintings.

I've said the same myself. I would add Midnite Blues and Life's Little Ups and Downs. And a few dozen more.

Mr.Sierra you are correct, spot on,Charlie Rich MOST UNDERAPPRECIATED. His talent was off the charts. His musicianship was superb. Never never never get tired of listening to his early cuts

Charlie was a great song writer and singer. I remember seeing him live at Hernando's Hideaway and other out of the way venues in the Memphis area when he was young. What a great experience. Not any like him around today.

Hernando's Hideaway, small place but big fun. I was an Elvis Tribute Artist in the 90's and was paired with a Rockabilly band from New York. Jerry Lee Lewis's ex brother in law (he was married to Linda Gail Lewis years ago) booked us to play 3 shows a night for 5 nights, during Elvis week. A great time had by all.

What a Vocal, what a genre crossing classic.Great piano fills by Charlie too..only wish he took a piano solo at the end but it always gets replay no matter!

Rusty Walker

One of the Best of the early Sun Recordings of unique soulful blues by the incredible voice of Charlie Rich! 💔

06monarch

This was excellent. He set the bar on every song he sang. Alex Taylor, James' brother, along with the Muscle Shoals rhythm section, also made a good version.
