Cup Of The Sun
Charlotte Church Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I took a cup of the sun and drank to a beautiful one
And I bottled the clouds and buried them under the ground
I took the form of a spoon and scooped out a piece of the moon.
And all the things that I won I fed to a beautiful one.

And everything is here and everything is yours my son,
You’re a song unsung.
Sing it loud and sing it strong, you’re a beautiful one.

I took a bucket of sound just to spill it all over the ground,
And all the air in my lungs I breathed for a beautiful one.
Gathered the sparks in the sky and held them up so very high,
But when I let them go it’s gonna be one hell of a show.

And everything is here and everything is yours my son,
You’re a song unsung.

Sing it loud and sing it strong, you’re a beautiful one.
Here you are where you belong, my beautiful one.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Charlotte Church's song Cup Of The Sun are rich in metaphorical language and seem to depict a person who is in love with someone beautiful and is willing to go to great lengths to impress them. The first verse speaks of taking a cup of the sun, which symbolizes something bright and beautiful, and drinking to the admiration of the beautiful one. Then, the clouds are bottled and buried under the ground, which might symbolize the suppression of dark and negative feelings. The form of the spoon is taken to scoop out a piece of the moon, which could talk about the person's attempt to reach out to the beautiful one, even if it means doing something quite extraordinary. Finally, what is won is fed to the beautiful one, which might mean that the person is willing to give everything they have just to be with them.

The second verse highlights the person's attempts to do more things to win the heart of the beautiful one. The bucket of sound is taken to spill it all over the ground, which could refer to the person showcasing their talents or providing entertainment for the person they love. Then, the air in the lungs is breathed out for the beautiful one, which might portray a willingness to share life's breath with them. The person gathers sparks from the sky and holds them high, ready to let them go for a show.

Overall, the song "Cup Of The Sun" can be viewed as a love song that speaks to the lengths a person is willing to go for love. The use of metaphors such as the sun, moon, and stars adds to the overall intense emotions being expressed in the song.

this sound is just so perfect for her voice. I absolutely love it.../this is the charlotte church i want to hear...no autotune, no dancey flashyness, just pure lyrics and music that is perfectly suited for HER voice.

A floating sound... a floating voice... she did it... created, and carried it along, marvellouslly, I felt myself on the wave, carried with no wind... It's a gift. Thanks for sharing with us. I'm suspicious, I love her from long ago, but... well... she's yet more incredible than I ever thought.

very often, artists can only sing a certain style and if they try other styles it sounds weird and unnatural. in the case of Charlotte Church, that notion is DEAD WRONG. her voice has so much range and dynamic and the fact that she can manipulate it to either be a brilliant opera jig (like "la pastorella") or a gorgeous melody (like "pie jesu") and then turn around transforming it into this mellow tune called "snow", without breaking or faltering the character of her voice, is amazing.

@eanne12

She is just simply outstanding.
