The Actors
Charlotte Church Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A silhouette of cigarette smoke crescents the wall
In purple pearl for the curtain call
I'm resigned to the fact that I'm alone in life
Lonely life, lonely life

I'm in the wings
The chorus sings on my own pretending
But here it is ceaseless and unbending
Life's to rest on my happiness
My constant trying
Lonely life, lonely life

Where did the actors go?
Backed out renounced the show
And left me stumbling on the stage
With just a rhyme left on the page
With just one act left of the play
And one more line for me to say
Lonely life, lonely life

Could it be that I'm the one caring and not cared for
Or is it there something I've not dared to comprehend
I'm content to just pretend they want me
Lonely life, lonely life

Where did the actors go?
Backed out renounced the show
And left me stumbling on the stage
With just a rhyme left on the page
With just one act left of the play
And one more line for me to say, to say, to say, to say

Where did the actors go?
Backed out renounced the show
And left me stumbling on the stage
With just a rhyme left on the page

With just one act left of the play
And one more line for me to say, to say, to say, to say

Overall Meaning

The song "The Actors" by Charlotte Church seems to explore themes of loneliness, isolation and feeling left behind in life. The opening verse "A silhouette of cigarette smoke crescents the wall" sets the mood of the song and immediately creates a picture of a quiet, lonesome scene. The line "In purple pearl for the curtain call" suggests that the singer is waiting for something to happen, perhaps the end of a performance or a moment of recognition.

However, the following lines "I'm resigned to the fact that I'm alone in life, Lonely life, lonely life" reveal a sense of dissatisfaction and resignation. It seems that the singer is all too aware of their loneliness and inability to connect with others. The chorus then follows, with the singer in the wings, listening to the others sing without being a part of it, pretending to carry on with life but unable to shake off the feeling of being constantly lonely.

The second verse further amplifies this theme, as the singer ponders whether they are the only one caring for others, or if perhaps there is something they cannot comprehend, leading them to feel isolated. The repeated question "Where did the actors go? Backed out renounced the show" reveals a sense of abandonment and perhaps betrayal, as those around the singer have seemingly abandoned them, leaving them alone on the stage with just one more line to say.

Overall, "The Actors" presents a poignant and melancholy exploration of loneliness, isolation and the fear of being left behind.

I love this song, and Charlotte sings it very well considering it is live and she hasn't sang in a while. I always thought of her as more of a mezzo-soprano rather than a soprano, so i think this is her embracing the alto side to her voice. There were a few flat notes, but overall it was a very good performance! I love Charlotte and will definetly buy the cd! WELL DONE!

I love it! Charlotte sounds AMAZING! Love it!

I LOVE this song. Don't understand all the criticisms. Seems like a really hard song for any female artist to sing.

Very nice charlotte, keep up the good work steve

Alex Simpson

People with a great voice don't really show it much. I don't get it, if i was as good as Charlotte or my Dad's favorite singer Peter Hammill, (i can't stand him!) I'd try my best to let everyone hear it. Don't get me wrong, I loved it! It's a great song, and i think i might buy her album. Does anyone know where i can find it? :)

Casutama

Yes, she DOES lack a bit control in the lower registers, but still I think this was a great performance. After all, there aren't so many low notes in it...

Mona

I don't like the song, but she knows a hell lot bout music... and has a gr8 voice!!!
