One of the best known American power pop bands, the group's biggest hits over the years include "I Want You to Want Me", "Surrender", "Dream Police", "Don't Be Cruel" (a cover of Elvis Presley's hit), and "The Flame". Their most recent release, The Latest, has gained critical acclaim. They also wrote and performed the theme song for "The Colbert Report" as well as "That 70s Show", both tunes being fan favorites.
Nielsen and Petersson originally formed the group as Fuse in 1967, with Carlos joining the group several years later; however, when Zander joined as vocalist in 1972, the group was renamed Cheap Trick. Zander is considered one of the best hard rock vocalists of his era. For their part, Tom Petersson has been known for playing custom made 8, 12, and even a 18 string custom bass made by Modulus for Tom in 1981 and Rick Nielsen also has a penchant for unusual instruments. He owns and plays a five-necked solidbody electric guitar (it can be seen in the video for the song "She's Tight" among others).

My Obsession
Cheap Trick Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The feelings never fade away
So where are you now
I loved you more than I can say
You wouldn't see couldn't touch can't believe it's true
Your love feels like home
You're my obsession
What's left is just a photograph
Everything I held so close
Was never meant to last
You're in my heart
It's never gonna fade away
Your love feels like home
You're my obsession
If I could find all the dreams I've made
I'd turn the clock back to yesterday
To hold onto what I got with you
Shine bright like all the stars
Unlock every dream I've made
I'd turn tomorrow into yesterday
All the things we did
What's left is just a photograph
You wouldn't see couldn't touch can't believe it's true
Your love feels like home
You're my obsession
The lyrics to Cheap Trick's song "My Obsession" depict the emotional turmoil that comes with loving someone so dearly, yet feeling as though all that is left is a mere memory. The singer pours out their heart, expressing that despite time passing, their feelings have not faded away. The person they loved deeply is no longer with them, and they cannot believe that it is true. The lyrics describe a love that felt like home, that became an obsession.
The idea that everything the singer held so dear was never meant to last is a theme that runs throughout the song. The memories they have created are only left in photographs, and they long to turn the clock back to yesterday to hold onto what they once had. They search for a way to unlock the dreams they have made, to live in a time when they were with the person they loved. The singer cannot let go of the love they once had and declare that it is an obsession that they feel. The final lyrics, "Your love feels like home, You're my obsession," ties the emotions expressed throughout the song together.
The song is a poignant reflection of lost love, and the powerful emotions that come with it. The lyrics are relatable to anyone who has experienced heartache and loss. The song reflects a deep sense of longing that is palpable throughout the lyrics.

The best song on the record. It actually reminds me a LOT like Material Issue. A very underrated record (aren't they all?). Cheap Trick will never get the respect or the money they deserve.

Really well spotted. RIP, Jim Ellison. This would fit right in on, say, "International Pop Overthrow". Sorry I didn't run across this for 5 years! It was an excellent observation!

In any fair universe, this would have been a monster hit.

I love how it starts off as a love song and then goes a bit dark lyrically. A Rick Neilsen trademark.
