By 2017, several of Cutler's songs (including "Your Shirt") garnered numerous streams and led to collaborations that year with acts like Louis The Child ("Slow Down Love"), ayokay ("The Shine"), Kidswaste ("Tonight"), and Kasbo ("Found You"). She signed a record deal with Ultra Records in late 2017 and released her first EP, "Snow In October". After touring with Quinn XCII in early 2018, Cutler released two independent mixtapes, "Sleeping With Roses" and "Sleeping With Roses II." She also went on her first two nationwide headlining tours in support of each mixtape, both of which sold out in advance.
In March 2019, she signed to Republic Records and released a joint EP, "brent", with friend and label-mate Jeremy Zucker shortly after. The EP features the single "you were good to me", which they performed live on The Today Show. It was also pressed on a limited edition white vinyl through the retailer Urban Outfitters. It was limited to a run of 1000 copies pressed. In May 2019, Cutler collaborated with Kygo on the single, "Not OK". It became her third collaboration (after "Slow Down Love" and "The Shine") to appear on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Songs chart, peaking at number 9.
In late 2019, Cutler began releasing new singles, including "How To Be Human" and "Lucky" (featuring Alexander 23). Along with "Sad Tonight", the songs served as the primary singles for her debut studio album, How To Be Human, released on January 17, 2020 by Republic Records. On January 23, 2020 she performed the lead single, "Sad Tonight", on Late Night With Seth Meyers. That song became Cutler's first entry on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 airplay chart, peaking at number 32 in March 2020. In April 2020, she was featured alongside Quinn XCII on the Louis The Child track, "Little Things".
Cutler was also slated to perform at Coachella 2020, which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In June 2020, she released a version of her song "Crazier Things" which features Noah Kahan.

I Miss You
Chelsea Cutler Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
February eleven was always like a holiday
Nothing still feels the way that it did, mm
Someone pulled the rug on me
I don't even remember the person I was gonna be
How did I get here? What did I miss? Mm
You wanted the water, well, you got an ocean
All your pennies turnin' into wishes
We get so used to it that we're gettin' jaded
Always wantin' more, I know I'm too impatient
They don't tell you that you're gonna miss this
They don't tell you that you're gonna miss the friends you had at eighteen
Say, "We'll see each other soon" but I'm still waitin'
Guess growin' up is makin' plans just to cancel
Calling all your friends to say you're sorry, got your hands full
They don't tell you that you're gonna meet your icons
Back when you were takin' photos on your daddy's Nikon
Tryna be like all your heroes back in high school
Just to grow up and meet 'em and realize they're not like you
You wanted the water, well, you got an ocean
Baby, close your eyes and just live in the moment
All your pennies turnin' into wishes
We get so used to it that we're gettin' jaded
Always wantin' more, I know I'm too impatient
They don't tell you that you're gonna miss this
Oh, oh, oh, oh-oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh-oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh-oh, oh, oh, oh
You wanted the water, well, you got an ocean
Baby, close your eyes, just live in the moment
All your pennies turnin' into wishes
We get so used to it that we're gettin' jaded
Always wantin' more, I know I'm too impatient
They don't tell you that you're gonna miss this
In Chelsea Cutler's song "I Miss You," the lyrics reflect on the process of growing up and the unexpected emotions and experiences that come with it. The song begins by acknowledging the singer's birthday and the nostalgia that comes with reaching a new age. It highlights the contrast between the excitement of the past and the uncertainty of the present, as the singer feels like someone has disrupted their plans and led them astray. This sentiment is encapsulated in the lines, "Someone pulled the rug on me, I don't even remember the person I was gonna be, How did I get here? What did I miss?"
The chorus then delves into the idea that life often gives us more than we initially desire or expect. It suggests that sometimes, we are overwhelmed by the magnitude of what we desired, using the metaphor of wanting water but getting an entire ocean. The lyrics encourage the listener to embrace and cherish the present moment, as well as appreciate the small things that gradually accumulate into something meaningful ("All your pennies turnin' into wishes"). The song also addresses the paradox of always wanting more but realizing that this constant desire can lead to dissatisfaction and a lack of appreciation.
The second verse of the song explores the theme of growing up and the changes it brings to relationships and aspirations. The lyrics lament that friends from the past may drift apart, despite the promises to stay connected ("They don't tell you that you're gonna miss the friends you had at eighteen, Say, 'We'll see each other soon' but I'm still waitin'"). It also touches on the disillusionment that can come with meeting one's idols and realizing that they may not be as similar as previously thought ("Just to grow up and meet 'em and realize they're not like you").
Overall, "I Miss You" captures the bittersweet experiences and emotions that come with growing older, reminding listeners to cherish the present and appreciate the lessons and memories that shape their lives.
