By 2017, several of Cutler's songs (including "Your Shirt") garnered numerous streams and led to collaborations that year with acts like Louis The Child ("Slow Down Love"), ayokay ("The Shine"), Kidswaste ("Tonight"), and Kasbo ("Found You"). She signed a record deal with Ultra Records in late 2017 and released her first EP, "Snow In October". After touring with Quinn XCII in early 2018, Cutler released two independent mixtapes, "Sleeping With Roses" and "Sleeping With Roses II." She also went on her first two nationwide headlining tours in support of each mixtape, both of which sold out in advance.
In March 2019, she signed to Republic Records and released a joint EP, "brent", with friend and label-mate Jeremy Zucker shortly after. The EP features the single "you were good to me", which they performed live on The Today Show. It was also pressed on a limited edition white vinyl through the retailer Urban Outfitters. It was limited to a run of 1000 copies pressed. In May 2019, Cutler collaborated with Kygo on the single, "Not OK". It became her third collaboration (after "Slow Down Love" and "The Shine") to appear on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Songs chart, peaking at number 9.
In late 2019, Cutler began releasing new singles, including "How To Be Human" and "Lucky" (featuring Alexander 23). Along with "Sad Tonight", the songs served as the primary singles for her debut studio album, How To Be Human, released on January 17, 2020 by Republic Records. On January 23, 2020 she performed the lead single, "Sad Tonight", on Late Night With Seth Meyers. That song became Cutler's first entry on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 airplay chart, peaking at number 32 in March 2020. In April 2020, she was featured alongside Quinn XCII on the Louis The Child track, "Little Things".
Cutler was also slated to perform at Coachella 2020, which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In June 2020, she released a version of her song "Crazier Things" which features Noah Kahan.

Chelsea Cutler Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Wanna share a cigarette, I want your head on my shoulder
Wanna fight and fuck it out, I wanna sing you to sleep
Wanna smile when you kiss your favorite spot on my cheek
I wanna
Tell you I'm sorry for the mistakes I've made
That I forgive you for your part that you played
NJ
Oh, NJ
Tell me that you're leaving so
One day
You'll be ready to come home
Is it over? Does it have to be over?
Wanna take you out in SoHo, get your favorite order
Wanna fight the way we did when we got too drunk together
Share our music on the subway and wear each other's sweaters
Wanna kiss you underneath the Eiffel Tower in Paris
'Fore we got back on the plane to go back home to your parents
Wanna talk about our problems 'cause I know they got buried
And two people this in love should never have to be worried
Oh, NJ
Tell me that you're leaving so
One day
You'll be ready to come home
Oh, NJ
Tell me that you're leaving so
One day
You'll be ready to come home
It's not over, it don't have to be over
I know that we could both be ready when we get a bit older
I know you want us to move on because you think that it's better
We could move on for the moment and not move on forever
I wanna talk about how Charlie is a nickname for Charlotte
Talk about moving to LA 'cause New York is the hardest
Know you couldn't see the future but I swear that I saw it
You were happy 'cause we finally got all that we wanted
I wanna tell you I'm sorry for the mistakes I've made
That I forgive you for your part that you played
I wanna call but what the fuck would I say?
NJ
Oh, NJ
Tell me that you're leaving so
One day
You'll be ready to come home to me
In Chelsea Cutler's song "Nj," the lyrics explore the longing for a past relationship and the desire to reconcile. The singer questions whether the relationship has truly ended and expresses a yearning for the connection they once had. The lyrics depict a range of emotions, from wanting to share intimate moments like smoking cigarettes together and cuddling, to wanting to confront their issues head-on and apologize for their mistakes. The mention of specific locations like SoHo and the Eiffel Tower in Paris adds a sense of nostalgia and romantic longing. The singer expresses a hope that one day their partner will be ready to come back home, implying a longing for the relationship to be rekindled eventually.
The song captures the complexity of emotions and the internal struggle that comes with the end of a relationship. It expresses the conflicting desires to move on and let go, while also hoping for a chance to rebuild what was lost. The lyrics also touch upon the importance of communication and the desire to talk through their problems, emphasizing that two people so in love should not have to be burdened with worry.

This hits hard. I had the same experience with my ex. Just hearing this song breaks me down but I know that maybe one day we can make things work again. Until then I will learn how to love myself and share that love with the people that are in my life who need it. Thank you so much Chelsea for making great music!. We love and support you ❤️

Kindly refer everyone to the live version of this song at Terminal 4 NYC. Especially during a pandemic, seeing people come together and share raw emotion like this makes my heart melt away.
