Lullaby
Chet Atkins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lullaby of Birdland, that's what I
Always hear when you sigh
Never in my wordland
Could there be ways to reveal
In a phrase how I feel

Have you ever heard two turtle doves
Bill and coo when they love?
That's the kind of magic
Music we make with our lips when we kiss

And there's a weepy old willow
He really knows how to cry
That's how I'd cry in my pillow
If you should tell me farewell and goodbye

Lullaby of Birdland whisper low
Kiss me sweet and we'll go
Flyin' high in Birdland

High in the sky up above
All because we're in love

Overall Meaning

The song "Lullaby of Birdland" is a jazz standard that has been covered by many artists over the years. The lyrics of the song are about the magical feeling that comes from being in love. The singer describes how every time their significant other sighs, they hear the "lullaby of Birdland." The singer goes on to say that there are no words in their world that could express how they feel about their partner.

The second verse compares the magic of music to the sound that two turtles make when they are in love. The singer describes the sensation of kissing their partner and the weeping willow tree that knows just how to cry, an imagery that represents the sorrow they would feel if their partner were to leave them. The singer then encourages their partner to whisper sweet nothings to them and take them on a journey to Birdland, a place that exists high in the sky because they are in love.

The overall message of the song is that love is an unexplainable force that creates a magical feeling that can transport us to other worlds. The lyrics are beautifully crafted, and the melody is equally entrancing. This song is an excellent example of how jazz music can express complex emotions with a combination of words and music.

Beautiful song . Chet and Tommy are magical

@matthewsorbie4396

The story behind this song is quite something. Chet had just been diagnosed with a brain tumour, and the doctors were going to take him to hospital the next day. Tommy was awoken the next day by his hero Chet, at 4am. And Chet told tommy he had gotten an idea for the last song on their album. So they both rushed downstairs to Chets studio, in their pyjamas, and recorded this song in ONE take. This ended up being Chet Atkins’ last recorded song before he passed away in 2001

It's hard to hold back tears when you think this beautiful tune was Chet's last gift to the world! Just remember if there was no Chet, there would be no Tommy!
