I'm Just A Jitterbug
Chick Webb & Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As I walk down the street
Seems everyone I meet
Gives me a friendly hello.
I guess I'm just a lucky so and so

The birds in every tree
Are all so neighborly.
They sing wherever I go.
I guess I'm just a lucky so and so

If you should ask me the amount
In my bank account
I'd have to confess that I'm slippin'
But that don't worry me, confidentially

I've got a dream that's a pippin'
And when the day is through
Each night I hurry to
A home where love waits, I know.

I guess I'm just a lucky so and so

And when the day is through
Each night I hurry to
A home where love waits, I know.
I guess I'm just a lucky so and so

I'm just a lucky, lucky so and so

Overall Meaning

The song "I'm Just A Jitterbug" by Chick Webb and Ella Fitzgerald presents the idea of feeling fortunate despite not having material wealth. The song begins with the singer walking down the street and being greeted by everyone she encounters. The pleasant environment is further extended to the birds in the trees who sing wherever she goes. The chorus, "I guess I'm just a lucky so and so," solidifies the idea that the singer feels fortunate despite not having the financial means that would typically qualify someone as "lucky."

In the second verse, the singer acknowledges that she may not have a large bank account, but she has a dream that is a "pippin'" (something outstanding or exceptionally good). The singer is confident in herself and refers to herself as a "lucky so and so" throughout the song. The final verse concludes with the singer hurrying home to a house filled with love, demonstrating that personal relationships are more important than material wealth.

The lyricist, Mack David, creates a theme of gratitude throughout the song. The lyrics paint a picture of a vibrant and supportive community. The song acknowledges that the true treasures in life are love, friendship, and community support. Moreover, the song describes the feelings of contentment that come from personal relationships, regardless of one's financial status. Thus, the song serves as a reminder to appreciate life's little blessings.

I'm not sure that "solid ascender" is correct in the lyrics. Wasn't the jazz expression "solid sender," as in a guy who sends you? Notice that she sings that she's a jitterbug lookin' for a place to jive, so "jitterbug" was orginally the dancer, not the name of a dance. In one Cab Calloway song, it sounds like the jitterbug was also high on dope, so I'm wondering if the term also referred to a twitchy "reefer" smoker. I love that the term "hot lick" is in this song in 1938, because that expression took hold. Musicians still play hot licks. And I'm wondering if the trumpeter blowing "through his hat" refers to a mute, or perhaps a real hat being used as a mute.
