I Want To Be Happy
Chick Webb & Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I want to be happy
But I won't be happy
Till I make you happy, too

Life's really worth living
When we are mirth-giving
Why can't I give some to you?
When skies are gray
And you say you are blue
I'll send the sun smiling through

I want to be happy

But I won't be happy
Till I make you happy, too

Overall Meaning

These lyrics convey the sentiment of selflessness and the importance of making others happy in order to find happiness oneself. The singer expresses a desire to be happy, but qualifies their desire by stating that they will not be truly happy until they can also make the person they are addressing happy as well. This suggests a level of interconnectedness in human happiness and fulfillment, and highlights the idea that we cannot achieve true joy without considering the happiness of others.

The second stanza further emphasizes this theme by suggesting that life is most fulfilling when we are able to bring joy to others. The singer questions why they cannot also provide this joy to the person they are addressing, suggesting a personal sense of insufficiency or longing to be able to brighten the other person's day. Finally, the lyrics express a willingness to help in difficult times, demonstrating the idea that true connections and commitment can manifest not just in good times, but in moments of challenge and darkness as well.

Thank you! As it should sound! Proper needle! Full range fidelity! Great machine, too!

No, all the treble is great. That record has excellent fidelity (I own it). Gives the listeners an idea of what equipment was capable of back then. If the record had been pressed on quiet materials, it would sound incredible.

You are welcome. That is a Pickering cartridge (with the stereo leads bridged for mono use) and 3.0 mil stylus. The amp is solid state. I could have turned the treble down a bit to mask some of the surface wear and I probably have the loudness booster on. Thank you for stopping by and viewing.
