@aleph0x Replenishment At Sea.
It's an operation that submariners do not carry out that often unless the sea is calm and they can cross deck the goods by helo.

RAS'ing is normally carried out by coming alongside another ship underway, keeping enough separation so that the hulls are not sucked together, but not so far apart that they cannot be crossed by lines linking the two vessels. Usually one of them is an Auxiliary Ship.

The US Navy has an extensive list of auxiliary ships. An auxiliary ship is a naval ship designed to support combatant ships and other naval operations. Auxiliary ships are not primary combatant vessels, though they may have some limited combat capacity, usually for purposes of self-defense.

They are purpose built to carry all the stores that warships need from fuel to food and spares. Even ammunition including missiles. They are capable of keeping pace with the fleet and supplying all that is needed. Sometimes they can be routed to pick up stores to keep the fleet in operations, but priority goods tend to be flown in to the carriers on the COD (Carrier Onboard Delivery) whilst the food stores are brought in by multipurpose ships and the aviation fuel by specialist tankers.

RAS'ing can be one of those fun moments when ship's crew from different navies get to say hello to their allies and play host to their neighbors. All NATO navies have very strong ties. Just as all submariners regard every vessel other than their own as a 'Target'!

The Hornet shot looks like a single long exposure. The strobe on the tail acts as a flash during the exposure and 'freezes' the aircraft in place.

Phish Phood

If you’re shooting in the dark (or near dark) flash essentially acts like a double exposure. If your subject is brightly lit enough it basically looks like a composite image, but isn’t!

I was going to make that same point...lol

Clever Navy photog!!

Came here to say the same !

6:40 The double capture of the aircraft is caused by the lighting from the red tail strobe. Basically, it is a long exposure and the scene is not bright enough to capture the aircraft, except when the strobes are on. Cool shot.

@chris Kola Yep, exactly correct.

@Aerochrome The landing gear isn't exposed. It is a silhouette against the deck which is exposed.

DarkDutch007

@Aerochrome I think the red tail light is bright enough to lit up the runway in its near facinity with a red tint, the bottom half of the plane and its landing gear isnt exposed or hit with light, it blocks the red glowing runway that is behind it, creating a silhouette, which makes you see the shape of the underside of the plane.

@Aerochrome Maybe it's bouncing off the superstructure of the control tower? If it's bright enough to light up the top of the jet maybe it can reflect onto the bottom as well
