Brown, one of two children, was born and raised in the small town of Tappahannock, Virginia, the son of Joyce Hawkins and Clinton Brown. A dancer since the age of two, Brown was not aware of his vocal talents until the age of eleven. Before becoming a vocalist, he was interested in becoming a rapper.
At thirteen, Brown was discovered by a local production team who visited his father's gas station searching for new talent. Since then, he began his recording career and moved to New York, staying there for two years. Brown's local production team organized an audition before Def Jam Vice President Tina Davis, who currently works as his manager. At the age of 15, Brown was then sent to perform for L.A. Reid and was subsequently signed in 2004 to Jive Records. By early 2005, Brown began work for his debut album, working with the likes of Scott Storch, The Underdogs, Dre, Vidal, Bryan Michael Cox, Bow Wow, and Jermaine Dupri.

His fourth single is the ballad "Say Goodbye," which is also a part of the Step Up Soundtrack. On June 13, 2006, Brown released a DVD entitled, Chris Brown's Journey, which shows footage of him travelling in England and Japan, getting ready for his first visit to the Grammys, behind the scenes of his music videos and bloopers.

The song "Emerald/Burgundy" by Chris Brown, Juvenile, and Juicy J is definitely an ode to past loves and regret. The first verse suggests that the artist is reflecting on his past mistakes, recognizing that his focus on drugs and women kept him from his dreams. However, he remains hopeful for the future and that he'll make better choices. He also recognizes that he is too proud to admit his past mistakes, indicating that he might still struggle with his vices.
The chorus of the song talks about being "green," which can refer to jealousy or envy. The artist questions whether their former partner's new lover is treating them as well or better than they did. They acknowledge that they haven't been their best selves in relationships, but they still feel possessive of their former partner. They even suggest using their birthstone as a way of proposing to them, indicating that they might still desire a future together.
The third verse is a collaboration between Juicy J and Juvenile, two rappers known for their explicit lyrics. This verse is not as introspective as the first two and is more focused on sex, cars, and money. The artists are bragging about their wealth and skills in the bedroom. The chorus repeats again to bring the focus back to the theme of jealousy and envy.
