I was super creepin', all your girls should've known (should've known)
Now I'm havin' flashbacks when I had that
Thinkin' 'bout where it could've gone
So can we take it back to the beginnin'?
I know you can't forget, but am I forgiven?
And even though you called it quits, I wasn't finished
Ain't playin' no games, I'm done
I'll treat you second to none
Make you my number one
But why you gotta be so petty?
Might have told a couple lies too many
When you done playin', I'ma come get it
It won't end if we don't let it
But why you gotta be so petty?
Might have told a couple lies too many
When you done playin', I'ma come get it
It don't gotta end if we don't let it
Baby, pick up your phone, yeah
Oh, why you got me over here alone? Yeah (alone)
How you only gonna give me one try?
Love only happens like that sometimes
My heart beat for you like a drumline, babe
Don't let our love run dry
I'm ready to take you serious
Ain't playin' no games, I'm done (yeah)
I'll treat you second to none
Make you my number one (but why?)
But why you gotta be so petty?
Might have told a couple lies too many
When you done playin', I'ma come get it (oh)
It won't end if we don't let it (oh)
But why you gotta be so petty? (Why you gotta be?)
Might have told a couple lies too many (oh)
And when you done playin', I'ma come get it (oh)
It don't gotta end if we don't let it (oh)
Baby, pick up your phone (yeah), yeah
Oh, why you got me over here alone? Yeah
How you put everything on me when you lie?
I don't point fingers, babe, I choose sides
Petty fightin', breakups
Then you blowin' my phone up
With your petty lies, bitch, grow up
Stop all the fightin', give up
Girl, I don't lie about who I love
Baby, I'm stuck
But why you gotta be so petty?
Might have told a couple lies too many
When you done playin', I'ma come get it (oh)
It won't end if we don't let it (oh)
But why you gotta be so petty?
Might have told a couple lies too many (yeah)
When you done playin', I'ma come get it (oh)
It don't gotta end if we don't let it
Baby, pick up your phone, yeah
Oh, why you got me over here alone? Yeah (alone)
In Chris Brown's song "Petty," the lyrics reflect the remorse and regret of the singer for his past actions that led to the deterioration of a relationship. He apologizes for the hurt he caused and acknowledges that he was unfaithful, admitting that others should have known about his disloyalty. The nostalgia creeps in as he recalls the moments when he had the opportunity for something more meaningful with his partner but failed to act upon it.
The singer seeks to reconcile and asks for forgiveness, acknowledging that it may be difficult for his partner to forget the pain he caused. Despite their breakup, he expresses his desire to continue the relationship and not leave things unresolved. He claims to be ready to take the relationship seriously, renouncing any intention to play games and promising to treat his partner as their number one priority.
However, the singer questions why his partner acts in a petty manner. He suggests that they may have also told lies, but he is willing to pursue their relationship again when they are done playing games. The lyrics imply that the relationship doesn't have to end if both parties are willing to work through their issues and let go of pettiness.
The singer feels frustrated that his partner is keeping them waiting and wonders why they are intentionally keeping him alone. He questions why his partner puts all the blame on him when they have also lied, emphasizing that he doesn't engage in finger-pointing and chooses to support his side. The singer urges his partner to mature and stop the petty fights and constant arguments, encouraging them to give up on the negativity.
Ultimately, the lyrics illustrate the singer's determination to mend the relationship and overcome the obstacles caused by both parties' actions. Despite the lies and betrayals, the singer professes their love and expresses their willingness to continue fighting for the relationship. Through open communication and a willingness to let go of pettiness, they believe their love doesn't have to come to an end.
