Tellin' everybody who will listen
That I ain't shit
I ain't been shit
But that's your perspective (oh, yeah)
And we know perspective's subjective (oh, I)
I, I (I, I, I)
Don't blame you, baby
You showed me, baby
That's okay 'cause you're gonna do what you wanna do (do)
Play it how you wanna, move how you wanna move (move)
I ain't gon' stop ya, say what you wanna say (say)
That's okay, it's okay
I guess you gotta do whatever helps you sleep at night (oh)
Hope you're comfortable layin' your head down on your pride (pride)
Holdin' on to lonely ego with your bitter lies
But whatever helps you sleep at night, at night
Ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh, no, no
Ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
For the record, I
You know I called you on your shit, why?
Bringin' tainted vibes
Somethin' is off with your inside
Bitter Betty doin' the most (oh-oh)
Need to call a holy ghost (ooh)
So you can find a healthy way to cope (oh, oh)
Oh-woah
We both out here livin' different lives
Why you still tryna be part of mine?
After seven months of no reply
Bound to make me show that other side
That's okay 'cause you're gonna do what you wanna do (do, oh)
Play it how you wanna, move how you wanna move (move)
I ain't gon' stop ya, say what you wanna say (say)
That's okay, it's okay
I guess you gotta do whatever helps you sleep at night (no, oh)
Hope you're comfortable layin' your head down on your pride (pride, oh)
Holdin' on to lonely ego with your bitter lies
But whatever helps you sleep at night, at night
Just go to sleep, baby (ooh)
What you gotta do is do
What's right for you and me, baby (ooh)
Oh no, no, no
Know you gotta be missin' me, baby
Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh, oh
Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh, oh
Whatever helps you sleep at night
I can help with that
Whatever you want, girl, I got you
The lyrics to Chris Brown's song "Sleep At Night" revolve around a dysfunctional relationship where the singer acknowledges their partner's negative perspective of them. The song highlights the subjective nature of perspective and the singer's acceptance of their partner's opinions about them. Despite the criticism and lies, the singer remains unfazed and allows their partner to do whatever they want.
The chorus emphasizes the singer's nonchalant attitude, stating that it is okay for their partner to act how they please. They encourage their partner to say whatever they want and do whatever they want, as it has no effect on them. The singer questions their partner's actions, suggesting that their partner's need to attack and spread lies about them is a reflection of their own insecurities.
In the second verse, the singer addresses their partner directly, asserting that they have confronted them in the past, calling them out on their behavior. They perceive a negative energy coming from their partner and imply that there may be something wrong within them. The singer also uses the term "Bitter Betty" to describe their partner's behavior, suggesting that their partner is consumed by negativity and should seek spiritual guidance for a healthier coping mechanism.
Throughout the song, the singer maintains their independence and refuses to be dragged into their partner's negative energy. They acknowledge that they and their partner are living separate lives and questions their constant attempts to remain a part of the singer's life. The singer reveals that their lack of response for seven months has only fueled their partner's bitterness, and they are reaching their breaking point.
In the end, the singer sends a message of detachment, stating that their partner can do whatever helps them sleep at night. They express a willingness to be there for their partner if needed, but also highlight the need for personal growth and finding what is right for both of them.
