Yester-Me Yester-You Yesterday
Chris Clark Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What happened to the world we knew,
when we would dream and scheme and while the time away,
I have a dream, so did you.
Life was warms, love was true,
Two kids who followed all the rules, yester-fools,
and now, now it seems those yester-dreams were just a cruel
and foolish game we used to play,
yester-me, yester-you, yester-day.

Where did it go, that yester-glow
When we could feel the wheel of life turn our way.
Yester-me, yester-you, yester-day.
When I recall what we had,
I feel lost, I feel sad.
With nothing but the mem'ry of yester-love
and now now it seems those yester-dreams were just a cruel

and foolish game we used to play,
yester-me, yester-you, yester-day.

Overall Meaning

Chris Clark's song Yester Me Yester You Yesterday is a melancholic piece of music where the singer reminisces about the time when they were young and in love. The title of the song repeats the phrase "yester" three times, making a reference to the past. The song talks about a time when life used to be warmer and love used to be true. The lyrics reflect the nostalgia of the singer who is lamenting the loss of a love that he once had.

The chorus talks about losing the past innocence and naivety and entering into adulthood. The singer wonders where did the "yester-glow" go, referring to the time when life felt like it was turning their way. The use of the phrase "yester-me, yester-you, yester-day" in the chorus represents how the memories that the singer has been dwelling on are moments from the past that have faded away. As the song progresses, the singer realizes that the memories of the past were just a "cruel and foolish game" played by the young naive lovers.

The song's tone is wistful and nostalgic, as though the singer is pining for lost love. The lyrics express the feeling of time moving on and the loss of innocence and youth. Chris Clark's vocals are understated and purposefully subdued, adding to the melancholic tone of the song. Overall, Yester Me Yester You Yesterday is a reflective song that encapsulates the universal experience of looking back and longing for the past.

This is unbelievable. I never heard about her all growing up until now. Stevie Wonder brought me here of why I first thought he’s the only one created his own version of that song.

Treat yourself, have a listen to her version of Head to toe!

It sounds so different, but beautifully different, because all the beautiful elements of this song are still in there.

OKay, I read up on her, had no idea who she was. She later co-wrote the screenplay for the 1972 motion picture Lady Sings the Blues starring Diana Ross, which earned her an Academy Award nomination. This lady is way underrated, what a talent. I wish her well....you don't get that far in life without some real intellect and talent. A belated congratulations to her for her Academy Award.
