Gone Fishing
Chris Rea Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm going fishing
I got me a line
Nothin' I do's gonna' make the difference
So I'm taking the time

And you ain't never gonna' be happy
Anyhow, anyway
So I'm going fishing
And I'm going today

I'm going fishing
Sounds crasy I know
I know nothing about fishing
But just watch me go

And when my time has come
I will look back and see
Peace on the shoreline
That could have been me

You can waste whole lifetime
Trying to be
What you think is expected of you
But you'll never be free

May as well go fishing

Overall Meaning

The song "Gone Fishing" by Chris Rea is a song about finding peace and happiness in life. The singer of the song is going fishing, despite not knowing anything about fishing, as a way of stepping back from the stress and expectations of life. The lyrics suggest that no matter what he does, he won't be able to make a difference in his life, so he has decided to take a break and go fishing.

The song's message is that people often spend their lives trying to live up to the expectations of others, and that this can be a waste of time. Instead, the singer suggests that people should do what makes them happy, even if it seems strange or unconventional. The song emphasizes the importance of peace and tranquility, which can be found in the simple pleasures of life such as fishing.

The lyrics are accompanied by a slow, bluesy melody that gives the song a melancholy yet hopeful feel. The song's message and style reflect the broader themes of Chris Rea's music, which often explore the complexities of human emotions and the search for meaning in life.

Tears in my eyes listening to this simple song. As a child, I fished. When my family and I went on any vacation, I had my rod and reel. A lonely 10 year old boy, walking in the woods to get to the river. Walking along the roads to get to the sea, all alone, no care in the world. Then i stopped fishing, started work, raised a family. I started fishing again this year and the child is back in me. Unless you fish, you cannot possibly understand.

My Dad taught me to fish and we had good times together,he was just home from the war , I was 8 years old and hardly knew him. But we bonded during that time and it was our time. He's been gone along time now of course and I am 82 years old now.Never forget those hours and I still talk to him, quietly.
