Rice was born in Washington DC, and has been a resident of Franklin and Nashville TN since his early twenties.
From his official website: "In 1996 he signed with a record label (Rocketown Records) as their first artist. After four plus albums and a few handfuls of Christian radio hit singles, he moved to an indie label (Eb+Flo) started by his producer and long time friend Monroe Jones. This new label relationship helped him expand his musical reach into more mainstream pop radio, especially with his light-hearted love songs 'When Did You Fall (In Love With Me)' and 'Lemonade,' still heard in Home Depots, Toys-R-Uses, restaurant bathrooms, airports and shopping malls around the country."
In June 2022, Tates Creek Presbyterian Church released a report on allegations of past sexual misconduct by Rice after commencing an investigation in October 2020.
So Much for My Sad Song

When I fell outta my bed is I hope the sky is gray
I'm gonna write a sad song today
So I make up my mind, slip on my shoes
I'm gonna pick up a paper and read the news
'Cause I'm sure to find enough blues to write my sad song
But when I open the door and the sun spills through
And the only blues to hit my eyes
Are those beautiful blues in the clear blue sky
So much for my sad song
So much for my sorry attitude
Let's make this a love song instead
'Cause I'm so in love with you
Come on, let's go out and play
Save the sad song for another day
No time for tears, I'm wearing a smile
So much for my sad song
So much for my sad song
So I pick up the news like I said I would
Drop my jaw right where I stood
'Cause the headline reads, "All the news is good
Because love is on the way"
And love floods the world right before my eyes
Everybody is dancing and slapping hi fives
And such beautiful music fills the sky and we all sing along
And now I snap out of my daydream
And I can't believe how real it seems
But I keep on dancing anyway
It's turning out to be a beautiful day
Sometimes I measure my day
By how many things go my way
And when things go wrong I usually get mad
But this time I'm glad my song didn't turn out sad
The lyrics of Chris Rice's "So Much for My Sad Song" detail the journey of the singer, who wants to write a sad song. The singer wakes up with a plan to write a mournful tune and expects the sky to be gray. However, when the singer opens the door, the sun spills through, and the beauty of the day takes the singer's breath away, causing the singer to realize that there are no blues to be found in the clear blue sky, only beauty. Instead of feeling sad, the singer is filled with joy and love, decides to write a love song and goes out to play, enjoying the beautiful day. The singer realizes that this day is turning out to be a happy one, and the singer is glad that the attempted sad song did not come to fruition.
The song's lyrics are a reminder that sometimes we have to let go of our despair and allow ourselves to embrace love, joy and positivity. While we may initially plan to dwell in our sadness, sometimes the beauty around us can shift our mood and allow us to focus on the things that make us happy. The song encourages us to appreciate the good things in life and to let go of our negative emotions so that we can celebrate the beauty that surrounds us.
