Arkansas
Chris Stapleton Lyrics

Took a Nine Eleven 'bout a hundred and seven down a back road
Where the white river runs and the southern sun makes the kudzu grow
And what I found in the Ozark mountains I ain't ever seen
It sure does feel like you're sittin' on top of the world to me

Gotta get down, gotta get down to Arkansas
Havin' so much fun that it's probably a little bit against the law
All the boys and the girls down there sure do know how to have a ball
If you wanna get down, gotta get down to Arkansas

Well, we burned through the one light towns like a scalded dog
When we lit out of Fayetteville, they were callin' the hogs
We made a pit stop in Little Rock for some barbecue
And when we hit West Memphis there were blue lights in our rear view

Gotta get down, gotta get down to Arkansas
Havin' so much fun that it's probably a little bit against the law
All the boys and the girls down there sure do know how to have a ball
If you wanna get down, gotta get down to Arkansas

Gotta get down, gotta get down to Arkansas
Havin' so much fun that it's probably a little bit against the law
All the boys and the girls down there sure do know how to have a ball
If you wanna get down, gotta get down to Arkansas

Gotta get down, gotta get down to Arkansas
Havin' so much fun that it's probably a little bit against the law

All the boys and the girls down there sure know how to have a ball
If you wanna get down, gotta get down to Arkansas

Overall Meaning

In "Arkansas," Chris Stapleton sings about his adventures on a road trip through the Ozark mountains and into Arkansas. The song begins with him driving a Porsche 911 down a back road where the White River runs, experiencing the beauty of the southern sun making the kudzu grow. He's overwhelmed by the sight and claims he's "sitting on top of the world" as he's never seen anything like it before. This reference to "sitting on top of the world" is a an allusion to a famous blues song by Mississippi Sheiks that has been covered numerous times by various artists.

The second verse broadens the perspective of the song as Stapleton further expresses his love for Arkansas. He sings about the fun he had experiencing the local culture, admiring the people's ability to have a great time regardless of what's going on. He mentions their energy and ability to party all night resulting in it being "probably a little bit against the law." The third verse is all about traveling through some of the towns including Fayetteville, Little Rock, and West Memphis. Stapleton mentions the excitement of experiencing a new place as well as enjoying some delicious barbecue in Little Rock.
