This is the start of the story of Elzevir and John, who Elzevir treated as his own son

The story how Elzevir would look after John as his own son,

And the smugglers betrayed on Moonfleet Bay by Maskew looking now at Elzevir's gun
Maskew, one of the smugglers, betrayed his fellow smugglers on Moonfleet Bay and is now facing Elzevir's gun as a result

Then a shot rang out in the morning light,
There was a gunshot heard in the morning

Maskew fell, a hole between his eyes,
Maskew was shot and killed

But it was his own men who brought him down,
Maskew was betrayed by his own men

and they also got poor John - oh, they also shot poor John
Unfortunately, John was also shot by Maskew's men

The world is a dangerous place

Especially for those involved in smuggling

When you're running from the Revenue,

And so to escape it came now for Elzevir to pick up the boy,
Elzevir decided to take John and escape

and carry him away,
Elzevir physically carried John away

For he could not walk with a bullet in the leg,
John was shot in the leg and couldn't walk on his own

and they made for the safety of the Purbeck cave
They went to the Purbeck cave for safety

T'was there that John would read one night,
It was in the Purbeck cave that John would read something one night

The words in the locket by candlelight,
John was reading the words inside a locket by the light of a candle

For the Bible verses held the key to Blackbeard's hidden treasure,
The Bible verses in the locket revealed the location of Blackbeard's hidden treasure

at the bottom of a Castle well
The treasure was located at the bottom of a Castle well

Oh, in a smuggler's life,
Life as a smuggler is dangerous

Especially during these times

That's where the secret of the Treasure lies,
The Bible verses held the key to finding the treasure

They were going to be wealthy

They were confident they would find the treasure

Blackbeard's bones are dancing here tonight
This line could mean that Blackbeard's spirit is restless because his treasure is about to be found

They reiterate their confidence in finding the treasure and becoming wealthy

This line gives the exact location of the treasure, at the bottom of a Castle well
