Oh my goodness! I just have to let you know that you are now my alpha example of "Seek And Ye Shall Find...On YouTube."

So, I'm an actor, writer, teacher and theatermaker born in the late 1960s, and my entire life my personal aesthetic has been "alt-hippy-counterculture." I used to always tell my mom that I was deeply disappointed in her for not having had me 15 years earlier so that I could have been a teenager during the Summer of Love, or actually attended Woodstock. :) ANYway, because of my love for all things hippy-woo-woo, my favorite musicals forever have been Hair, Godspell, Jesus Christ Superstar and Pippin. I mean, obviously. But some of these musicals (Godspell and JCS mainly) left me really baffled about something, and I've never had anyone to ask. Why, I've wondered, does there seem to be a sort of faction of Christianity comprised of...hippies?? Like, how did two seemingly opposing lifestyle choices like that somehow come together? Or maybe the question was, how did a faction of HIPPIES decide that they'd spend most of their time preaching Christianity? And also, why did it seem like these Jesus hippies weren't JUST hippies but...hippy CLOWNS?!?! With face paint, and big shoes, and frequent forays into juggling, ukeleles and mime routines?! Godspell wasn't the only example of entertainment that supported this odd phenomenon -- I noticed it in other places too, like several theatre companies and touring puppet troupes that at first glance seemed to be all about my beloved rag-tag, recycled-junk-art hippy stylings, but upon closer examination, were all presenting shows built around Bible stories, gospel teachings, and evangelical nudges towards a life filled with Jesus. What the heck?, I kept wondering. This can't be a coincidence, this subset of the arts world. WHY are there Christian hippies? WHY are there patchwork, Deadhead-y clowns for Jesus? Where did they come from???

Fast forward through the years (to everything, turn turn turn, there is a season, turn turn turn) to last night. I was watching clips from the movie version of "Godspell" here on YouTube, for the millionth time, marveling over Victor Garber's adorable 23-year-old face, and I thought, dammit, I need answers, and maybe they're not far away. I paused "Godspell," went to the search bar, and typed in "hippy clowns for Jesus?" ONE video came up...and it was YOU!!!!

OH EM GEE!!!
You literally created AN ENTIRE COLLEGE LECTURE ANSWERING MY QUESTION!!
Hopefully the length of this babbling comment conveys how excited I am not only to find this video, but also to discover that this movement is an actual field of interest for you -- that I'm not alone in my fascination. I literally squealed when you mentioned Hair, Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar; several other things you talked about connected to experiences I'd had -- for example, your discussion of Berkeley, CA being a significant seat of counterculture/social justice Christianity in the 1970s reminded me that playwright and director Martha Boesing, who was a major builder of the alternative theatre scene in Minneapolis MN (where I live) moved to San Francisco to start a theatre-based street ministry called Faithful Fools.

In summary, I'm so grateful for this video. I'll finally be able to sleep at night thanks to you. ;) If I was of college age in Cookeville, I would sign up for every class you teach -- already, I've made notes of other things you mentioned that I now want to Google and learn more about. :) Thanks a million, Andrew Smith -- you are appreciated! Have a great day!
